Gun Owners Expected to Rally for Jan. 19 'Gun Appreciation Day'
"On 01/19/13 go to your local gun store, gun range or gun show with your Constitution, American flags and your 'Hands Off My Guns' sign to send a loud and clear message to Congress and President Barack Obama," says coalition website.
A conservative group is hoping that tens of thousands turn out to show their support for gun ownership with their pocketbooks and picket signs the day before President Barack Obama is sworn in for a second term.
The group, a coalition brought together for the event, declared Jan. 19 "Gun Appreciation Day." The hope is Americans nationwide will show their support for gun ownership by turning out en masse at gun stores, ranges and shows from coast to coast.
“The Obama administration has shown that it is more than willing to trample the Constitution to impose its dictates upon the American people,” said Gun Appreciation Day chairman Larry Ward in a press release.
The day comes as the gun control debate becomes more divisive. Earlier this month, two PA lawmakers released statements about sponsoring legislation that would allow teachers to carry guns in schools, in response to December's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn.
On Wednesday, Obama signed 23 executive actions aimed at curtailing gun violence and called on Congress to make tougher punishments for gun trafficking and place limits on magazine sizes.
Clayton's Hunting and Fishing in Horsham does not have any special events planned for Saturday, but the staff at the shop welcome any opportunity that allows them to stand up for their customers' Second Amendment rights.
"They are addressing the epidemic of violence and the mental health problems in this country by passing laws against inanimate objects," said Ed Hartzel, instruction range master at Clayton's. "All they are doing is turning law-abiding citizens into criminals overnight. That's working further away from a real solution."
In the past year, several high-profile mass shootings -- including one in a Colorado movie theater and one at a Wisconsin Sikh Temple -- sparked the gun control debate. According to a New York Times article, Obama called for Vice President Joe Biden to head a gun control task force.
Hartzel says the intense scrutiny over firearms has translated into more traffic in the store as gun owners add to their collections before more restrictions are in place. He says Clayton's sold more than 1,000 guns in the past 30 days, and there are days that see several hundred visitors to the shop's gun range.
"The average concensus is that when they see their freedoms being threatened," said Hartzel, "they are going to run out and get the guns before they are not available anymore. This isn't about duck hunting or deer hunting, that's not what is in the Constitution. This is about having the right to protect ourselves."
The "Appreciation Day" is modeled after this past summer's "Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day," the answer to a boycott of the fast food chain after CEO Dan Cathy declared his support of what he termed "traditional marriage." According to ABC News, Chick-Fil-A posted record-setting sales during the "Appreciation Day."
A counter event has also been formed by a group called Parents Against Gun Violence (PAGV), which has declared January 19 Child Appreciation Day.
"Organizing a 'gun appreciation day' so soon after the Newtown Massacre is in poor taste. In response we have decided to promote a 'Child Appreciation Day' to honor our children and the victims of Newtown," said Jennifer Caldera, a member of the PAGV Steering Committee, in a statement to the press.
Gun Appreciation Day is scheduled the day before Obama's second inauguration.
The planned event currently includes the following coalition members:
- Second Amendment Foundation
- Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms
- Special Operations Speaks
- Revolution PAC
- Citizens and Country
- Social Security Institute
- Committee to Draft Judge Andrew Napolitano
- Conservative Action Alerts
- Women Warriors PAC
- Conservative Action Fund

20 children dead, never had the chance to live their lives, 6 adults dead who were living their lives and put them selves before these children to save them so they could have a life...and we have Gun Owners Rallying? Are you SERIOUS? What is wrong with this world? These gun owners must have children, let alone other family members who can become victims of one single shot from a firearm. Wake up America! You are NOT going to kill one of my family members because of your silly love of firearms. First off, dummy, the gun isn't the one who killed. It was the piece of garbage behind the gun. And someone intent on killing will do it whether with a car, bomb, knife, or gun. I own 8 guns. None have ever killed. Actually, I only owned 6 until last Thurs. I bought two "Assault Weapons" (wow, that sounds so much worse than "rifles") on Tues. simply as an F.U. to this administration's posturing. A country divided down the middle by "Hope and Change." We got change. Record recession, gas prices, and now.......gun sales. Yes, the failed approach to gun violence has led to.....record gun sales. Way to go Obama. I gotta look up the numbers but its no secret that the last three weeks are setting every record imaginable. Sheriff's departments unable to process concealed carry licenses, all "assault weapons" sold out and companies running manufacturing lines 24 hours. Hundreds of thousands more weapons hitting the street. Good job dividing a nation by threatening to stick it to the other 50% (give or take). Us vs. Them. You got your hope and change. Things are certainly changing. And you keep hoping.

The rest of us just want the peace of mind to know there are some common sense safeguards out there to avoid these weapons getting into the hands of the wrong people. By the way, all your boasting about your gun collection leads me to believe you are compensating for something.

I am sorry you feel this way...but just so you know. The gov. is lying to you when they tell you that they are doing this for those children...they are using these tragedies to furthur their agendas. Those of us that are fighting to keep our rights are doing so for our children. Have you thought about who your taking the guns from? Do you think the criminals will just surrender them to the gov. just because of a law? Don't you see that criminals are criminals because they don't listen to the law? They attack and hurt people in places they know that no one can protect themselves. If they know that you are armed they are less likely to want to bother you. You won't be saving the children. You will be helping the criminals. Also, there will never be a peaceful world when you have people that commit crimes. When you can take away all the evil people, then you can talk about gun control. If you really look into history, there are many many examples in history of those in power taking the citizens guns then they took over the country and there was more violence then before. Anytime they prohibit guns, the violence actually goes up not down...look up the information for yourself. One more thing: According to the FBI in 2011, 1,694 people were killed with Knives, 726 people were killed with hands or feet, 496 people were killed with clubs or hammers and 323 people were killed with rifles of ANY type. So why aren't we calling for a ban on Knives??

Patrick, controlling guns is only control on good people. Since all on-line arguments end up talking about Hitler let's start there. How about if back at the start of WW2 we decided to make peace between England and Germany by disarming England. How do you think it would have turned out for England?
Well that is how it will work out here. Bad guys have guns and always will. Bad guys have fist or their youth. They make deadly weapons in prison so they can make them on the outside even easier. Do you want us to try and out run them?
Control of guns only means control of us. Control of you. Because like it or not the fear of who is carrying and not carrying gives you some protection. When the good guys are disarmed the bad guys will have less fear of getting hurt in an attack.

Why don't you ask the person who pulled the trigger what's wrong? What laws that they are trying to pass today would have stopped him from doing what he did?
1) Ban Hi Cap magazines
2) Ban "Assault" Rifles ( These are NOT assault rifles they are indeed Semi Auto's )
3) Universal Background check ( already in place NICS)
4) Asking your Dr if you have a gun? What do Drs have to do with Gun control?
5) 7 or less magazines as opposed to 10+ Will 3 bullets really make a difference?
6) Creating Gun free zones creates a magnet to mass killers. They know they will not encounter any resistance.
Are you that guillible that we will live in a peaceful world? really? Civilization has been around for over 2000 years and has always been at war, why would that change now?

Australia banned guns and guess what - their crime rate has skyrocketed. Guess why? Because all the criminals have guns, and know that nobody else does.

1st off, not a single thing our King proposed would have prevented what happened in Newtown CT. 2nd...just like the healthcare law, which sat around collecting dust until the left saw an opportunity to get it enacted, these so called "common sense measures" were already written and the left sat in the weeds, waiting for a tragedy to exploit to have them enacted. In this case, the pure exploitation of the tragedy and the sufferings in Newtown CT.

Patrick, She most likely did. But mothers tend to get blinded by the dangers of their own children. A lot of gun owners get blinded by people they trust. But it is that misplaced trust that got them killed or hurt. And that can happen to you if you are armed or not. But don't you think that if she had not had any guns she would have been any safer? A lot of people get killed by all sorts of weapons when they are armed or not by people who are out to get them. If someone were to target me my gun would only give me the smallest of chance's. If any. But the random home invader or car jacker would find I am not as easy a target as he believed. The bottom line really is all the gun laws and bans will never do anything to make us and our children any safer. None at all. And letting the nation go the direction of gun laws is taking attention away from the core problems. Our so-called leaders are using the people who hate guns as a tool to keep the nation from looking at their failure to do their job. And from their desire to do their job. And you anti-gun people are helping to keep the problem going.

Siobhra DeWar, I never said I was against guns, you assumed that because I do not believe that guns equal safety that I am against guns. In truth I agree that bans will not stop the issue since it is caused by a culture that has been ingrained in us that the only way to stay free, to not feel oppressed, and to protect yourself from the world is by a gun. If someone that disconnects from reality hears this they will turn to a gun. I've felt the pull to use a gun to solve a problem, I was able to turn to other ways to solve problems. Imagine how a person that is angry at the world would feel if someone told him the only way to fight the bad guy, is a be a good guy with a gun. This has been known since Waco and due to the first amendment, the only thing the government can due then ... is control the guns.

I'm a local cop. The 23 Executive Orders seem pretty reasonable, but bans on firearms don't make my job easier. Taking guns away from law abiding citizens makes my job MORE DIFFICULT! It only emboldens the criminals. I also have two small children the same age as the Newtown kids. Gun free Zones are set up to have law makers look good. They are statutes which allow Law Enforcement to tack on additional crimes to a school shooters charges as well as serve as a supposed "deterrent", but seeing as the shooters usually kill themselves, the only people it deters are the law abiding gun owners. I WANT that type to be armed when they are at my kids school! I do my utmost to arrive as fast as possible to an emergency, but our average response time is 3-4 minutes. Newtown was over in 2 minutes 47 seconds. What's the real solution to protect my kids? Our kids? Waving a magic wand and making all guns disappear? Good Luck with that one..hasn't seemed to work with drugs..

The solution is to increase security at the schools, fortify the buildings themselves, allow a few select members of the faculty to carry concealed and then send them to the same active shooter training that we cops are sent to. More Police presence around the schools? Already done and part of our recent efforts. I'm proud to walk through the schools a few times per shift if able. But arming and training some of the school employees should be part of the program. We protect our money with armed security. Why can we not protect our children, our greatest treasure, with the same level of commitment? An officer in every school? A sitting duck target and totally unrealistic seeing as cops are getting laid off nationwide and my dept. has a difficult time even getting needed equipment, safe vehicles or even replacements for old, out of warranty ballistic vests. Like pulling teeth from the council. What a fantasy! We need to turn our teachers into heroes instead of victims, trained to attack and think on their feet instead of hiding and praying and being killed like lambs. Empower them to protect my kids during the 3-4 minutes it takes for the cavalry to roll in. (Just a cops and a fathers 2 cents

If you read the exceptions to the law on the school gun free zones you will find the usual "Police Officers", those with written permission from the school, etc. The last exception on the list is "Any other legal reason". To get a carry permit you need a 'legal' reason. My carry permit legal reason is self-defense. That is what it says right on the permit. It is a loophole to the gun free zone law big enough to drive a truck thru. However I don't know anyone foolish enough to test it.
Also the law says "all weapons". As a member of a living history group doing the middle ages we have gone to schools with our swords and axes and we had to get the signed permission before hand to do the demo.
But it is a pain when I go to visit my two grandsons and have to park on a side street and leave a loaded gun under the seat because I can't even leave it in the car in a school parking lot.

Joe, I completely agree. The second amendment was not set up just to protect us from or neighbors and criminals, but to protect ourselves from the government as well. And just for this reason. A handgun is no match for the military or criminals carrying their own illegally obtained assult rifles. How are more laws going to keep criminals from getting guns that they are already getting illegally? We need armed personel in our schools. I have a 4 kids in three different schools in Bristol twp. I have seen increased patrols around the schools, and it's getting harder to pick my children up mid-day for appointments. Though this may be a tad inconvenient, I'm thankful it is the way it is. I'm fighting for front/rear armed personel in my childrens school. I'd be happy to be trained by the police department to stand gaurd there myself if it means my children and their classmates are safer. More laws isn't the answer, but stricter punishments for criminals should be in the forefront of these arguments. Go after the people who are NOT obtaining their firearms by legal means and stop trying to strip us of our rights. If you are a respnsible gun owner, there are no accidents. Guns don't get up by themselves and shoot people.

Guns are not the problem so the very idea of even looking at new gun laws or even guns at all is only a distraction. The absolute only reason anyone is pushing for gun control is so they don't have to do the work to solve the problems in this country.
As for taking the guns they have said they would if they could. It is only that we gun owners keep calling our elected leaders and march in rallies that keeps them from taking the guns. Fienstien has come out and said it herself. Others have said we can't take them yet so we do what we can. Then they put more and more restrictions in place to burden down gun ownership.
And yet they still do all they can to avoid locking up bad people. In a couple of months this will all die down and you liberals will go back to making post about how "Prison is not the answer".

If we as a species are ever to live peaceful lives, all must have the same temperament, and all must be good, even tempered, and have the exact same views. Since this can never happen, guns provide good people with the ability to maintain a safer world as bad people are not free to kill at will without possibility that a good person armed with a gun will stop them in their tracks. Our society counts on there being more good people than bad, and our security counts on the good people being able to stop the bad. Take away guns from good people, or enable arming in a minimalistic way by reducing effectiveness - # of bullets in a magazine, etc - tips the scales strongly in favor of bad people. They will not have the same rules, ever.

The intent of the 2nd amendment is to maintain a civilian militia to protect our other rights; free speech, freedom to assemble, etc. It has nothing to do with hunting or target shooting. If we are to be armed to resist tyrannical oppression by our own government, we need to posses military grade weapons. High capacity magazines are not for hunting. They are to allow resistance fighters to provide as much down range firepower as possible before reloading.
I have a bolt action rifle to hunt mule deer and elk; a lever action rifle to hunt white tail deer. My .22 rim fire is for plinking and hunting squirrels and rabbits. I have a buffalo gun for buffalo. Ducks and geese I hunt with a long barrel, tight choke pump gun. I have a double for grouse and pheasant. These are all sporting arms; they are for the sport of hunting. They are not self defense weapons or for use to oppose tyrants or invaders.
For civilian militia and self defense I have a 1911 semi auto pistol and an AR platform rifle. I have high capacity magazines for both. My next firearm purchase will be an M1A with spare magazines. These are not sporting arms. These are serious fighting tools.
There is a difference.

Sorry, Tom, but you've got your facts mixed up. The 2nd Amendment was intended to provide a way for the Federal Government to call up a WELL-REGULATED citizen MILITIA, without having to bear the costs of keeping a standing army for that purpose.
So, it's not that the right to bear arms enables citizens to defend themselves against the federal government, rather it gives the federal government the ability to call up a citizen militia when it deems necessary.

A famous quote is out there which goes "Those who turn their swords into plowshares will end up plowing the fields of those who did not (turn their swords into plowshares)". One law-abiding citizen with a concealed carry permit might have made a difference at the Colorado movie theatre, the Virginia Tech campus, or any of the incidents which have occurred. Some may argue that we do not live in the Wild West anymore, but challenging economic times will bring out the worst behavior.Horse thieves in the past were hanged from the nearest stout tree, while murderers were hanged in the public square, all after due process in a court of law. Today we have car jackings, drug dealers, and home invasions. These criminals are given a slap on the wrist, are given a minimal sentence, and sent on their way only to re-enter the criminal justice system's revolving door. So for anyone who may think that ending private/civilian ownership of weapons is the definitive answer, I strongly suggest looking back into history. It was done as population control.

Teachers with guns? As '"local cop" I am sure you train often with your firrarm. My place does 4 times a year including tactical and dim light. I am all for more trai.ed cops assigned to the schools. Things like adrenalin and tunnel vision and not knowing who the "good guys" are would all come into play with the teachers.Lets not ask them to be cops and incur the liability that goes along with that.

If this article was correct, it appears as though we may be better off taking our chances with properly trained and armed citizens (though I do understand officers are much more likely to be involved in an incident requiring the use of a gun):
"In the November 15, 1993 issue of Newsweek Magazine, George Will reported that police are more than 5 times more likely than a civilian to shoot an innocent person by mistake."
Here is another interesting fact for the women out their wondering if they should arm themselves:
"An unarmed woman is more than 10 times more likely to be raped than an armed woman."
Two can play the fear mongering game with "statistical information".

Someone needs to tell people that you don't have to be a "progun" person to be conservative. Progun is progun. Its a single policy issue. It has very little to do with a particular political persuasion.

Why is the gun argument always an all or nothing fight? We the people elect our representatives to enact laws on our behalf (specifically the majorities behalf) . We regulate what we have the right to do and not to do and the limits we set. Every constitutional right has degrees, not absolutes. Justice Scalia has endorsed that sentiment, especially with gun regulation. Surely we the people can figure out a way for our citizens to maintain and enjoy the right to own guns (as protected by the Second Amendment,) while at the same time enact safeguards to try and prevent irresponsible people from having access to "tools" designed for killing. This doesn't have to be an all or nothing conversation.

The leftist, liberal wussies who think we can maintain our freedoms through hugging and kissing our enemies are the "all or nothing" clowns. Or course, you know better because you have MD after your name and are smarter than me and most others. In fact, judging by your name, you left your home country to come to the U.S. (besides less immigration issues due to your degree) because you feel a need to change our culture of gun ownership because it worked so well in your home country.

Biggest threat to the world to day is the idea of progressive liberalism. While I think many average people who class themselves as being liberal and wish for a utopian world as we all do,it simply cannot be.But these people are just misguided maliable and easily convinced by people with higher power because its easy that way.
The real danger is these cloak and dagger governments hiding behind a cloud of liberal ideas to push through their agendas because they can't possibly be the bad guys as they are fighting for the oppressed as they say.
This is the way they get to power and take all your rights because they are doing it in your interest and how could they possibly be the bad guys when they are apparently fighting the corner of the minorities.
In truth they don't care at all for these minorities only gaining the power which they so want and will go with any public opinion to gain this power
Unfortunately we are on the direct road to true government oppression in the west and we are fighting for it.
