UPDATED: 1:50 a.m.

Warminster police are evacuating an apartment complex and nearby residents while a standoff with an alleged gunman continues.

Police were called to the Jefferson on the Creek apartment complex, 675 E. Street Rd., Warminster, for a domestic disturbance at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and "were met with gufire," according to Warminster Police Chief Mike Murphy.

The police and the gunman had a "firefight for a short period of time" before the man barricaded himself and his common law wife inside the apartment, Murphy said. The woman eventually got out of the apartment and is being interviewed by police.

No police officers have been injured so far, Murphy said. "We're settling in for what we feel is going to be a prolonged incident ... it's going to be a cold long night."

The alleged gunman is holed up in an apartment, reportedly with a 12-gauge shotgun. He may have other guns as well, according to emergency radio communications. Those reports have not yet been confirmed.

Residents of the complex initially reported being asked to remain in their homes during the incident. But those trying to get into the complex were unable to return.

The Red Cross set up a reception station at William Tennent High School, where communications director Dave Schrader said those displaced by the standoff could warm up and get a bite to eat.

The incident drew police personnell from miles around. Sirens screamed and lights blazed as police cars and tactical response teams from across Bucks County raced to Warminster in response to the incident, which began around 8 p.m.

Police closed down Street Road at the Davisville Road and at Reeves Lane and rerouted traffic off of Street Road and up Davisville.

The nearby Davisville Shopping Center has been cleared and police have secured the perimeter.

More than a dozen police units are lined up along Davisville Road, blocking the entrance to the shopping center, which is next to the apartment complex. Police from nearly every Central and Lower Bucks municipality, including Doylestown, Bensalem, Lower Southampton and Upper Southampton, are assisting on the scene.

The Central Bucks County major incident response team, called SWAT by some, drove its Lenco Bearcat to the scene. The Bearcat, which is stored in Doylestown, also was used during a standoff in Doylestown Township on Father's Day with an armed gunman.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

I live in the Developement right above the Jefferson Creek Appartments and I would not move because Warminster is a safe place to live. Warminster Police Department keeps our neighborhood well protected. They can not help Crazy People acting out and causing problems in the neighborhood. I had helicopters flying above my house and did not feel like I was in danger. THANK YOU TO THE WARMINSTER POLICE DEPARTMENT AND ALL THE OTHERS WHO CAME TO HELP THEM OUT WITH THIS CRAZY PERSON!!!

Brittttttttany,
The gun laws prohibit this type of behavior, it's the individual that is messed up. Ask yourself if it was the car or the driver in the accident on Rt. 611 in Doylestown on the day before Thanksgiving. Was it the knife or the person in the latest murder with a knife. Why is it the gun laws in this case?

It's not the gun laws...it is the lack of mental health care, and the fact that the judicial system is a joke. Odds are that the gun being used is an illegally aquired weapon...

nothing to do with gun laws. anyone can get their hands on a gun. Punish the people breaking the laws not those that follow them. Taking guns from sane capable people is not the answer and since this is happening in my development right behind my apartment I do believe my opinion is one that matters, not someone that isn't dealing with it or living through this crap. its nut jobs like this that give those of us that own guns a bad rap. It's a 12 gauge shot-gun. Not illegal. Just a shot gun. They sell them at Walmart, K-Mart, Dicks, etc. about $2000 bucks with ammo.

I read something a few months ago that we've closed something like 90% of the mental hospitals in this country in the last 25yrs. Where do you think the nuts are going? They're walking the streets doing nonsense like this. It's societies fault we have so much violence these days. We need to be making massive mental health control laws, not gun control laws. Lets treat the sick people before they do these things.

I totally agree. There are too many crazies out there that are not getting help. We do need more mental institutes to treat them. THAT definitley is a problem with our system.

Eric S

11:17 am on Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Many years ago housing the mentally ill in such facilities was deemed harmful to the inmates/patients. And to some extent it was, if you do some research you'll see the abuses that came from the situation. But did we lock away the criminals (facility employees) or sweep the issues under the rug? So eventually the horror of mental institutes was replaced with group homes and in many cases private homes. People were given housing help and some mental health coverage. But now we are beginning to see the results. It isn't working.

We don't need "massive mental health laws", we need to assure those confined in any mental health facility are not abused and are receiving proper treatment. When abuses occur, treat the abuser for what they are, a criminal who preys on the weak. Make sure the meesage is loud and clear, make the penalty so harsh as to cause anyone to recoil at the notion of engaging in a criminal manner.

This concept works for violent criminals too. Make the penalty so terrible the idea of the crime itself is abhorant. No plea deals, no time off, and decades instead of years.

Yes, it sure is true that mental health is a real problem in our society and there are too many folks not getting the help they need... but for God's sake, consider that the access too many people have to weapons is part of the problem.

That's a crock of shit. People have LESS access to firearms now than they did 60 years ago. You used to be able to order guns through catalogs and have them delivered directly to your house.
What people also have LESS access to is mental facilities. When the mental facilities closed down, the mass shootings went up. There is a direct correlation between the two.

Those of us who legally own firearms are not the issue. The issue is the people who illegally own them.

And just like anything else, there are a few bad seeds in any group. Do NOT punish the majority because of the actions of a few.

There's nothing wrong with having a discussion on all of this. But this thread is probably not the best choice and none of us know any of the details as to why this happened and what this guy's history is.

Then explain why before the 1968 gun control laws we had less violence. Explain why states with less gun control have less violent crime than states with strict gun control laws. Look at Camden or Trenton. NJ has notoriously strict laws (like 3 years in prison for a slingshot....seriously, look it up). And both small cities have murders every single day. Now compare them to Harrisburg and Allentown.

The reasons for evacuation would be: risk of unintended cross fire casualties, people "popping" their heads out to see how things are going and risks of fire from certain types of tear gas used in these situations. If you live there, just follow police instructions and you should be fine.

Yes it is partially to blame county funding because its hard to get health insurance & u need it to be seen @ a mental hospital. Yes I would say its about the same as Kensington as I used to go to Kensington myself to cop thank God I'm in recovery. The Warminster police haven't had enough experience with these issues as Warminster used to be beautiful & safe but is getting worse as the days go on. Having your own armed protection CAN be used against you. Believe it or not. I live right up the street in Bucks Landing a.k.a "da Ville" & I would call it a little Philly. There's just as much access to drugs & illegal drugs. I personally am not afraid to walk around my complex or Kensington. This place changes at nighttime & most are unaware due to having jobs & sleeping the night away. If you're scared to live in your own apartment or suggest you move.

Just mind your own business. Don't say anything rude that would tick somebody off because it could be the wrong person. It could be a looney bin for all you know. So I suggest if you are scared just stay out of the drama & keep to yourself. I hope everyone is safe.

The police scanner isn't as active as before. They need to smoke him out of there. This is getting out of hand it's been hours.

Saying he wants to smoke a cigarette first, then he'll surrender. And he says he needs medical attention. He says he's passing out and throwing up. The average person takes 7 mins to smoke a cigarette.... we shall see.

Thank you to all the wonderful and dedicated police officers, EMS, Red Cross workers, and anyone else involved in the 'standoff' that came to a safe conclusion this evening.

Does anyone else find it to be an issue that it took the police damn near 8 hours to get one man with a gun when they had swat plus like 30 cops from all over... SWAT... Special weapons and tactics??? 8 hours and a death later way to go warminster PD and friends smfh

God damn. I think you are all morons. #1 comparing warminster to kensington. Really? #2 obviously mental illness is a problem! We have never as a people accepted mental illness as a medical condition as we should! #3 school shootings dont happen in the city! Mass shootings happen in the burbs where kids are white! Shootings in the city involving kids dont happen in schools! Look it up! The batshit crazy kids are raised in nice neighborhoods IN THE BURBS! #4 If your holed up in a house or charge a school with a knife or bat your not going to kill a lot of people! Guns are the problem!

I agree. They did a great job! Why it took a long time is because you dont risk an officer or swat member to harm when talking can end it peacefully. Well done law enforcement!

Yeah peacefully with tear gas that my taxes pay for they could've been in and out of there in half the time especially considering there numbers this is not Kensington or north Philly he was one man with one gun in one building against multiple cops and swat members from multiple departments 8 hours is ridiculous and unnecessary

*shows
Every neighborhood us just like Kensington or North Philly as this craziness happens everywhere, no neighborhood is exempt.

If they would require all boys to go into the service, right out of high school, we would have more real men and a lot of these issues would be eliminated.

Great job Officers and I hope no one was hurt or killed, except the subject of course. Save our tax dollars.

Geez...you people watch way too much TV. There was absolutely no reason to breech that residence when the bad guy was the only one inside! SWAT did this by the book and it paid off. He stopped shooting within minutes of the police arriving on scene. So you idiots want the cops to use incindiery devices in an apartment complex!? Yes...flash bangs and "smoke grenades" are incindiery...one of those things goes off by a curtain or on upholstery, you have an inferno. Thank god the police were running this operation and the impatient patch folks weren't! Let the cops do their job...they don't second guess you at yours.

exactly, ask Mayor Goode and the State Police about the 2nd "MOVE" standoff........killed a bunch 11 people (5 kids) and leveled a city block with 65 homes......death and hundreds of millions is damage, legal fees, etc. Best remedy for wackos' and radicals is - take your time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOVE

i'd like to know why the first sentence states "leaving a 90 year old dead", and then no mention of it whatsoever in the article???

I'd like to know why the school district sent out an email and didn't use the mass phone system that we paid for..updates will be available on the website. Sorry but most of us didn't even know about this until this morning. Yeah I have time to check the tv, patch, and email everyday before getting ready for work and getting the kids ready for school. JOB WELL DONE DR. CRESSMAN!

Maybe they didn't feel it was right to mass call people at like 10pm? There would be many people who would not appreciate that as well. Can't please everyone. There's always going to be someone with a complaint. And what would you have done had you known last night? Nothing. Just followed the story like everyone else.

The way the warminster police handled themselves with the 16 yr old and the bb gun (I think the riddled the neighborhood with about 50 bullets that day), I am surprised only one person was killed!

Good job Warminster Police! When will they have their awards ceremony?

as usual, the police caused more damage than the actual perpitraitor. This time, they killed an innocent senior citizen. Do you really believe he shot through his floor into the apartment below him? They found bullet damage a half mile away. Sorry folks. The police killed that woman.
