Bristol Fire Company (Station 51) is reminding everyone that this year Fire Prevention Week starts on Sunday, October 6 and runs through Sunday, October 13, with the theme “Prevent Kitchen Fires,” since more of us will be cooking, baking and roasting our favorite holiday meals. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

• Use caution when lighting the pilot light or burner on a gas stove.

• Don’t use metal in the microwave.

• Don’t overfill pots or pans with oil or grease.

• Wipe up spills and don’t cook on a dirty stove.

• Always roll up long sleeves and tie back long hair when cooking.

• Never leave cooking food unattended.

• Keep dish towels, pot holders, and paper towels away from the stove.

According to Lorraine Charlie, Vice President of Communications for the National Fire Protection Association, kitchen fires account for over 400 house fires per day in the United States, and the number one cause of those fires is unattended cooking.

Fire Chief Herb Slack wants to urge community members to be smart and safe while in the kitchen this fall.

“Three out of every five kitchen fire injuries happen when people try to fight it on their own. We urge everyone to take the necessary precautions when cooking and to be safe and aware while in the kitchen,” said Chief Slack.
