College Without High School

College admissions representatives speak to homeschoolers

“But what about college?” is a question often posed to families who pursue nontraditional educational options for their teens. Yet the path from these options to college is as well-worn as it is little-known. Admissions counselors from three local institutions of higher learning—Penn State University, Ursinus College, and Bucks County Community College—shared information about this pathway last Monday at Lubavitch of Bucks County. The panel addressed questions ranging from what they look for in a homeschooling transcript to the role that athletic ability plays in admissions decisions. The panel made clear that their institutions welcome homeschooling applicants and encouraged being in touch with their offices early in the college search process.

The event was sponsored by the Newtown Learning Cooperative. NLC is an expansion of the Princeton Learning Cooperative, which supports teens to leave traditional public and private schools to create lives and educations for themselves based on their interests, goals and abilities. NLC will open in Newtown in September of 2014 and can be reached at info@newtownlearningcooperative.org, 609-851-2522, and http://newtownlearningcooperative.org/.
