Falls Township Resident Wins Using 66K Chereographed Lights

Township Gives Homeowner Award In House Decorating Contest

How many lights does it take to win a Christmas decoration contest in Falls Township? It takes 66,000 big, blinking and choreographed ones.

A series of switches, knobs and one advanced computer program operated Falls Township homeowner Milt Warrell's light show.

Running on over 176 separate channels, the several thousand multi-colored lights dance and flicker to programmed songs. Passersby with access to a car radio were able to listen in as the lights twinkle to the theme song of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation and 10 other song listings. The entire set up cost Warrell nearly $10,000.

The impressive show landed Warrell first place in the township's annual House Decorating Contest.

"It was very humbling to win," Warrell said. "I was going to tell the township to make sure not to enter me. Very few people can compete with what we did. It wouldn't have been very fair."

Before Warrell could opt out, a local resident had already nominated his house. Warrell won first place two years prior.

To Warrell, a father of two and local contractor, the decorating has little to do with the contest, but more an annual hobby he picked up several years ago.

"It all started when my wife bought me a switcher box and some lights. Now it's a twisted hobby that just got out of control," Warrell said jokingly.

His hobby is not isolated in the township. Several other homeowners share his obsession with illuminating the night sky.

"There are a few of us in the area. We kind of compete, but mostly we just share ideas and help each-other out," Warrell said.

While a stipulation in the contest prevents him from competing again next year, Warrell intends to ramp up the show by trying to find room on his roof for over 30,000 more lights.

"I'm going to be just shy of 100,000 lights next year," Warrell said.
