GadZukes! Fourth Annual Zucchini Races Take Place At LMT Farmers Market

Levittown resident Debbie Zimmerman wins the vendor category in Lower Makefield Farmer's Market annual zucchini races.

It was tough getting a parking space last Thursday evening at the Lower Makefield Farmers Market since zucchini racers and zucchini race watchers were everywhere.

About 15 people entered the race with zukes that were decorated creatively in a variety of themes. Awards were given out in a variety of categories including "best decorated," "best named," and "most nutritious."

The zucchini racers had to decorate their entries with a zucchini no greater than 12 inches long and 8 inches wide, with a maximum weight of four pounds, according to the rules. The racers had to create vehicles with wheel axels that were incorporated into the zucchini itself, i.e., no roller skates, toy cars, etc. The wheels of the entries had to be constructed with three or four wheels made of wood, metal, vegetable or plastic. No motors are allowed.

The winning vehicles were the most durable and rolled in a straight path, said Sharon Kopp, market manager and zucchini race organizer.
