What Message Are You Sending To Your Children?

Read about my feelings after leaving The Lorax movie recent.

The other night I took the boys to the movies to see Dr. Seuss' The Lorax.

The movie (in case your unfamiliar with it) is an adaptation of the 1971 book by Dr. Seuss of the same title. The story itself is about the effects of corporate greed on the environment. The Once-ler begins to cut down Truffula Trees to make his Thneeds. Soon, all the trees are gone and the environment is left in ruins. The movie expands on the story with the detailed addition of Thneedville, which further show the harmful effects of a pollution-filled world. The movie features great animation that brings all the characters to life and lively music. The boys' favorite song of course was "How Bad Can I Be?"

"I am the Lorax who speaks for the trees."

As great as the movie (and story) was, I unfortunately left the movie theater feeling a little upset and angry (with people, especially PARENTS). The mess left behind was absolutely horrendous!

I understand that popcorn can spill over, especially with young children, but for a person to walk out of the theater and leave your containers, cups and other trash behind is deplorable behavior.

But to make matters worse, children just watched a 90-minute movie about protecting and healing the environment to than watch their parents walk out and leave behind all their trash without concern or care.

I think protecting our environment is an important thing! I want my children (and someday, grandchildren) to be able to enjoy the great outdoors the way I did growing up. I am not a hard-core "Green Person" but I do take a few extra steps to protect the Earth.

There are a lot of simple things you can do that promote environmental consciousness within your home.

  1. RECYCLE. It really does not take a lot of extra time or effort to recycle your plastics, metals and paper products. You will be amazed at how you can reduce your landfill impact with just simple recycling efforts.
  2. Switch to CFL Light bulbs. Not only will you save electricity but your save yourself money.
  3. Walk or ride a bike to your errands that are less than two miles. One of the greatest things about living in Bristol is the ability to walk almost anywhere for anything in town. Walking/riding is also good for your health.
  4. Shop LOCAL Consignment & Thrift Shops. Before buying new check-out your local consignment and thrift shops for older items you can put to good use in your home.
  5. Use cloth napkins daily instead of paper. Again it saves you money, while protecting the environment.

These are just a few simple, inexpensive ideas to help you live a little greener.
