March 8 Is International Women's Day

Holiday Observed Since Early 1900s

Tuesday, March 8 is International Women's Day.

According to the International Women's Day website, it has been observed since in the early 1900s -- a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies.

Events commemorating the day are held throughout the world. In the region, there are two events in the Philadelphia area.

Sisters on the Planet Film

What: Oxfam American Action Corps. will hold a screening of the Sisters on the Planet film followed by a discussion with two speakers.

When: March 8 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Where: Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia.

 

Women, Water & The World

What: The event will include a reception with a performance by the Anna Crusis Women's Choir and art by the Women's Caucus for Art Philadelphia Chapter; a poster session, highlighting student projects and Philly organizations doing work here and abroad; and a panel session, featuring local and international academics and activists.

When: March 16 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Where: International House Philadelphia, 3701 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia.
