Medical Center Awarded Grant From Susan G. Komen Affiliate

The Philadelphia Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure awarded grants to 44 organizations, including St. Mary Medical Center, for breast cancer outreach initiatives.

In order to empower the local fight against breast cancer, the Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is awarding more than $2 million to 44 organizations, including St. Mary Medical Center.

The medical center was awarded an education and support grant for Leading the Way to Wellness for Breast Cancer Survivors at a luncheon on March 9 with the other 43 recipients.

The Affiliate distributed $2,006,709 in grants—a direct result of Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure fundraising— to support breast health education, awareness, screening, treatment and support projects specifically targeting low-income, uninsured women, according to a press release from the medical center.

"St. Mary Medical Center – as well as our other grantees – is hard at work every day in our neighborhoods breaking down barriers, making critical connections to women and the loved ones who support them, and building bridges to the cures," said Elaine I. Grobman, CEO of the Philadelphia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. "Their dedicated teams are out there helping fulfill the Komen Philadelphia Affiliate promise to not quit until we’ve led ALL women in our 15 counties out of the darkness of this disease and instead filled their journey with hope and life-enriching, life-saving services regardless of race, financial ability, education or background."

Grobman said that they are relying on fundraising for the upcoming Susan G. Komen Philadelphia Race for the Cure, which is scheduled for May 13, to assure the continuation and growth of the community grants program.
