Portion of Tyburn Road to Close Monday

PennDOT crews will be working as part of the project to rebuild the Tyburn Road Bridge over the Amtrak rail lines.

Tyburn Road will be closed between New Ford Mill Road and Pennsylvania Avenue beginning Monday. PennDOT crews will be working to rebuild the road, which will reopen in late August.

The work is part of PennDOT’s $14.9 million project to rehabilitate the Tyburn Road Bridge over the Amtrak rail lines, PennDOT said. The bridge is currently categorized as "structurally deficient."

During construction, traffic will be detoured over Pennsylvania Avenue, Route 1 and Route 13.  Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through the area, PennDOT said. Local access will be maintained up to the construction zone.

In addition, the Tyburn Road ramps at Pennsylvania Avenue will be closed
during this stage as will the eastbound Tyburn Road ramp to northbound Old Bristol Pike, according to PennDOT. There will also be intermittent short-term closures of the northbound Old Bristol Pike ramp to eastbound Tyburn Road and the southbound Old Bristol Pike ramp to eastbound Tyburn Road.

The Tyburn Road bridge over Amtrak rails was built in 1955 and has been
restricted to one lane in each direction since 2011 due to its poor condition, PennDOT said.

PennDOT’s contactor is working to restore the steel-I beam bridge by
removing and replacing the bridge deck and 10 beams; stabilizing embankments; and paving the roadway approaches. The project is expected to finish in mid-October 2014, PennDOT said.

PennDOT said the bridge carries more than 9,100 vehicles a day. When finished, the new bridge will have four 12-foot travel lanes and two six-foot shoulders.

HRI Inc. of State College is the general contractor on the $14,916,363
project, which is financed with 100 percent state funds.
