Tuesday Marks The First Day Of Spring

The Spring Equinox falls on March 20, 2012, which is also the first day of Spring.

Though we didn't have much of a winter in terms of snow and freezing temperatures, that season has ended and Spring is upon us.

The Spring 2012 season officially began at about 1:14 a.m. Tuesday, according to Almanac.com. Tuesday is also known as the Spring Equinox.

The word "equinox" is derived from the Latin words meaning "equal night." Almanac.com states that the Spring and Fall equinoxes are "the only dates with equal daylight and dark as the Sun crosses the celestial equator" -- meaning that night and day are both 12 hours long.

According to TimeandDate.com, seasons are opposite on either side of the equator so although we're celebrating the Spring Equinox here in the Northern Hemisphere, the Southern Hemisphere is celebrating the Fall Equinox today.
