Thirty Seconds Could Win Levittown Filmmaker $1 Million

Levittown freelance videographer Don Garbinski is among the top submissions for Doritos' Crash the Super Bowl contest.

It's a laid back setting, two guys sitting on the couch, watching the game and snacking on some chips. Before them, a little dachsund is anxious, eager to get his paws on the Doritos. One of the guys tosses a chip to the pooch, a seemingly harmless gesture that he immediately regrets as the dog munches it down and goes into overdrive.

The 30-second scene described above is one of hundreds of home-made commercials competing in Doritos' annual Crash the Super Bowl Contest. The competition invites amateur filmmakers to create their own ad for the nacho snack chips, with the grand prize winner receiving $1 million, having the ad play during the Super Bowl and, for this year's contest, getting a chance to work on Marvel's Avengers sequel.

"The million dollars is what I am mostly interested in," said Don Garbinski, who shot the video in his Levittown home.

Garbinski spent one day shooting the video with his cousin, Ken, and three days editing it together before submitting it to the Doritos contest.

"I act in the video, and I directed it," said Garbinski. "I had to keep going back and forth to check that the camera was properly focused."

Garbinski's dog, Rupert, is the real star of the commercial, however. At one point during his chip-fueled frenzy, Rupert jumps up to shut the back door, preventing anyone from escaping with the Doritos.

"I've been teaching him to close the door for a while," said Garbinski. "I have a fenced in yard so he can go out and run around, but I got tired of having to get up and close the door every time he went out."

Since joining the contest, his "Taste the Bold" spot has stayed on the website's front pages under the most viewed and highest rated categories. Amateur commercials will be accepted until Nov. 24. After the deadline, Doritos will choose the top 20 ads, then let the public vote for their favorite. With hundreds of videos already uploaded, and more still to come over the next week, the commercial's high rankings certainly help Garbinski's chances to advance.

Originally from northeast Philadelphia, Garbinski moved to Levittown with his family a few years ago, where he continues to grow his production company, Chimera Productions. The freelance videographer mostly shoots weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs and corporate training videos.

"I've been making movies ever since I was a kid," said Garbinski. "I'm mostly self-taught, just something I've been able to pick up on as I went along."

Submissions for the Doritos Crash the Super Bowl contest will be accepted until Nov. 24. After evaluating each commercial, Doritos will announce the top 20 videos on Dec. 14. On Jan. 4, 2014, the top five videos will be revealed, allowing the public to vote for the best commercial. The grand prize winners will be announced after Jan. 29, 2014.
