Levittown, PA and Hurricane Sandy's Aftermath

The aftermath of Hurricane Sandy

Some thoughts in the wake of Hurricane Sandy:

The energy of a home changes when the power goes out. No pun intended, I mean that quite literally. As Hurricane Sandy pounded the East Coast, we all felt her wrath. And so did the trees and power lines in my neighborhood.

We spent the past week creating makeshift lanterns (thanks, Pinterest) and stocking up on water, firewood, candles, and such and staying glued to the local news to see how nervous and worried we should be.

Watching news anchors wading in a violent ocean just before a storm, always raises my anxiety level (though my home is miles from the nearest beach).

I felt prepared, I thought we were ready, but when that power clicks off, it's not just the television you lose. The hum of a house is quieted, the lights you trust will always stay lit, suddenly aren't. The inevitable flip of the bathroom switch when one knows full well it is not going to produce light, always brings a chuckle.

After 20 plus hours of no electricity, nerves start to fray. As darkness fills a room for a second consecutive day, it feels almost natural to simply head off to bed. Even if it is only 6:00.

The energy of your home depends on electricity. The refrigerator hum, and whirling washing machine are such a part of our daily lives it's hard to spend a day without it. Without it, we are forced to consider what really matters. Dead cell phones and iPods render us helpless.

Seth Godin suggests we all take a moment to get over ourselves and be thankful for the here and now and make an impact today. While others foresee an economic boost, thanks to Sandy.
