Former District Judge Leonard J. Smolsky, 87, of Middletown Township [Obituary]

Leonard J. Smolsky, 87, of Middletown Township died Sept. 8, 2013

Leonard J. "Smokey" Smolsky, 87, of Middletown Township, died Sunday in his home. 
Born and raised in Minersville, Schuylkill County, he moved to Middletown Township in 1957.   
He was the husband of the late Marie Steffanic Smolsky. They were married for 65 years.
Smolsky was a former district judge and a supervisor in Middletown Township who helped plan and develop the Oxford Valley Mall, according to his daughter Marie D. Rooney. 
Smolsky also served in Iwo Jima in WWII and was awarded a Purple Heart.
He was a member of Queen of the Universe Catholic Church in Levittown and belonged to the Knights of Columbus. 
"My father worked for the Reading Raiload most of his life," Rooney said, "and almost retired until June 1994 when he started the SMS Railroad in Bridgeport, N.J., with Jeff Sutch and James McHugh."
"And before he started the SMS Railroad he had a big part in the New Hope & Ivyland RR," she said. 

SURVIVORS

Daughter Marie D. Rooney (Tucker) of Naples, FL; and sons David Smolsky, Sr. (Frances C. Police) of Port Charlotte, FL and Raymond J. Smolsky of Frackville, Schuylkill County; 10 grandchildren, Donna Maria Aschenbrenner, Dina Marie Henon (Stephen), Stacey Chiarello, Patti Ann Smolsky, Katie Lyn Smolsky, Dawn Gale, David Smolsky II, Cyndy Smolsky, Steven Smolsky and John Mineka and 15 great grandchildren; a sister, Beatrice Rumpf, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Vincent R. Smolsky.

SERVICES

Calling hours 3-5 p.m. Thursday, at the James J. Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc., 2200 Trenton Road, Levittown. Interment will be private.
