As the Grammys closed the books on another installment of its yearly spectacle in style, the event was overcast with sadness over the death of legendary music icon Whitney Houston. Houston, 48, died Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles. The results of the investigation are still forthcoming so there’s not much to report at this point. The L.A. County Coroner has sealed the autopsy results at the request of the L.A. County Sheriff’s office, which is standard procedure for high-profile cases.
Host LL Cool J handled his duties like the seasoned vet that he is beginning the telecast with homage to Houston as an acknowledgement to her person and legend. Jennifer Hudson offered a heartfelt vocal tribute to Houston by singing her No. 1 hit I Will Always Love You. Stevie Wonder also expressed his sentiment musically as only he could on the harmonica.
As a surprise to none, swept all her categories and took home six trophies. She gave an incredible performance of Rolling In The Deep and in typical Adele fashion, did not disappoint.
Kanye snagged four trophies to add to his already impressive collection. I highly doubt we'll see the last of Mr. West.
Bon Iver was named Best New Artist despite releasing an album four years ago. That caused a bit of controversy on Twitter for those in the know. But hey, it's the Grammys and they make the rules right?
Chris Brown, almost synonymous with controversy these days, took home the prize for Best R&B Album.
In the tradition of unique pairings that give the Grammys its appeal, Alicia Keys and Bonnie Raitt paid tribute to the late Etta James by performing Sunday Kind of Love. Rihanna and Coldplay joined forces and Foster The People and The Beach Boys followed suit with a mashup of their own.
Legends like Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen also performed showing they still have what it takes to command an audience.
In the relentless pursuit of weird, Nicki Minaj closed the show with her song Roman Holiday. Her set featured an overzealous heaping of religious symbolism and innuendo. In the end, I'm not sure if she was rapping or putting a curse on the crowd. It seems once you start pushing certain envelopes you have to keep pushing or risk losing a fan base that is as equally in tune to the gimmickry as it is the music.
Those are but a few of the notable moments in this year’s broadcast. Next year the Grammys will continue to try and outdo themselves and make "Music’s Biggest Night" even BIGGER and BETTER than the year before.
