Pinwheels around Bucks County mark Child Abuse Prevention Month

Seeing a whole lot of pinwheels around Bucks County on your commute or errand run? These “gardens” have been “planted” by local volunteers to raise awareness of child abuse during National Child Abuse Prevention Month. They will remain in place until the end of April, reminding passersby that 886 brave adults helped protect a child from abuse in our county in 2013.

This is the fourth year for Bucks County Children’s Advocacy Center to oversee the local Pinwheels for Prevention Campaign. Pinwheel gardens have been installed at three sites in upper, central and lower Bucks County, sponsored by local organizations and businesses.

“We are focusing on the positive changes in our communities and what people can do to protect our children,” says Leslie Slingsby, LSW, director of the Bucks County CAC. “So we are saluting the 886 instances in 2013 of caring adults and incredibly brave children who took a loving and courageous step to report abuse.”

Established in 2008, the Bucks County Children’s Advocacy Center oversees a coordinated, multidisciplinary and comprehensive response to reports of suspected child sexual and physical abuse. Its goal is to improve the system response in order to significantly reduce the “retraumization” of young people during the investigative process by the systems that were specifically developed to protect children.
