Man Causes Bomb Scare At St. Mary's Medical Center

The hospital was the scene of a bomb scare Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency crews were dispatched to St. Mary's Medical Center in the Langhorne section of Middletown Township shortly after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday for reports of a person who possibly had an explosive device.

The white man, whose name police are not releasing, was reported to be causing a disturbance in the emergency room and was thought to possibly have a bomb, according to a release prepared by Lt. John Michniewicz.

After arriving, police said they received word the man did not have a bomb in his possestion.

Middletown Township police Officer Jeffery Swenson and Sarge, his explosive detection K-9, were brought to the hospital and examined the subject's possession, police said.

No explosive devices or indications of them were discovered, the release said.

As of Tuesday morning, the subject remained at the hospital for evalution and Middletown Police will be conducting a follow-up investigation, said police.

While police were securing the scene and access to the 374-bed medical center was stopped at Newtown-Langhorne Road (Route 413) for about an hour.

Twitter user Nancy Ratner (@NRatner) posted about the situation on the social media site:

"Entrance was barricaded with police cars. No one was getting in. Nurses parked across street. Flares set all over."

By 3:30 p.m., the police from Middletown and Langhorne were spotted leaving the hospital and normal operations had appeared to resume.
