Man Killed When Car Overshoots Off-Ramp

A 43-year-old Philadelphia man died in a late night crash on the Route 1 Superhighway, police confirm.

A 43-year-old man from Philadelphia was killed late Friday night when the SUV he was driving shot off a highway exit ramp and crashed in a gulley in Middletown Township, police said.

The Ford Explorer was headed northbound on the Route 1 Superhighway when the driver overshot the off ramp onto Maple Avenue (Rt. 213) and flew into a gulley. The car rolled several times and then hit a tree. The driver was ejected from the driver's side window, according to Middletown Police Officer Mark McLeod, who is investigating the crash.

McLeod said there were signs the driver tried to brake before driving off the ramp, but his action were too late.

The car may have sat in the gulley for almost an hour and was spotted by a passing motorist who flagged down police at 10:44 p.m. Friday.

According to his identification, the driver was less than a week short of his birthday, McLeod said. The officer added, the victim's name will be released once his family has been notified.

The on and off ramps that connect Route 1 and Maple Aveune (Rt. 213) were closed for more than an hour as emergency personel handled the investigation. The ramps reopened shortly after midnight Saturday.

Middletown police report they were assited by several local fire companies.

McLeod told Patch, more information would be released when the investigation is completed.
