Emergency Shelter in Levittown Set for Hundreds

The shelter is located at Pennsbury High School East in Falls Township.

As the fury of Hurricane Sandy began raged on outside on Monday, about 20 people were in the Red Cross shelter located at Pennsbury High School East on Hood Boulevard in Falls.

By Tuesday morning, hundreds could fill the backup powered school gymnasium, shelter manager Stacey Emery said.

Red Cross volunteers had hundreds of cots available, she continued, and planned to continue setting them up into the evening.

The shelter - one of three in the county - is pet friendly, Emery stressed.

Food will be served for those displaced by the storm. The shelter also offers shower facilities.

Those at the shelter trickled in throughout the day, Emery said.

Many of the shelter’s occupants were evacuated from the Harbor Light Apartments in Bristol Borough. The complex was evacuated due to the flood risk.

“Come before the storm hits and the roads are flooded,” she urged Levittown residents.
