Newportville Bridge To Close For Repair Project

Detours are planned for the 6-month repair project of the small stone bridge in Bristol Township.

Newportville Road in Bristol Township will be closed and detoured beginning Sept. 12 for a planned six-month PennDOT bridge repair project.

PennDOT plans to repair the small single-span stone bridge, built in 1869, located between Parkview Avenue and Hazel Avenue in Bristol. The bridge spans over a branch of the Neshaminy Creek.

According to Charlie Metzger, a spokesperson for PennDOT, the repair project was needed because the stone bridge was "structurally deficient."

Construction crews from J.D Eckman, Inc will be doing a number of repairs, including fixing the side walls, the bridge deck, as well as adding new parapets, guiderails and pavement.

The bridge sees regular heavy traffic. In a news release, PennDOT claims that over 8,600 vehicles travel over the 20 by 25 foot bridge a day.

"This is a pretty essential bridge," Metzger said.

According to Metzger, local access is planned to be maintained up to the point of construction. Traffic will be detoured over Route 13, Bensalem Boulevard and New Falls Road.

The construction project is part of a $7.4 million contract to repair six bridges in several counties by 2013.
