A Pennsbury High School graduate is awarded a prestigious scholarship.

Pennsylvania State University student David Zdancewicz received the Pennsylvania Space Grant Consortium Undergraduate Scholarship for 2011, according to a news release.

Zdancewicz graduated from Pennsbury High School in 2008. The Fallsington native said that he has a longstanding interest in space and the development of space-related technologies.

"I believe the continued exploration and economic development of our solar system represents the single greatest project for technological progress in the next century," Zdancewicz said. "As such, the award from the space grant consortium is very encouraging to me."

During his time at Penn State, Zdancewicz has been heavily involved with the Formula SAE team. Last year, he worked on the design and analysis of the car’s frame and several other components. He will take a lead role in the power train development in the upcoming semester.

After graduation, Zdancewicz will be exploring his options in industry and graduate school, but said that ultimately he would like to be involved with the research and development of new technologies.

"The development of technologies for space has incredibly far-reaching and positive effects on society," Zdancewicz said. "Even today there are still endless examples of new technologies that were originally developed for or are offshoots of the space program 50 years ago."

Zdancewicz is currently spending his second summer interning with General Motors (GM) in Michigan as a subsystem validation engineer. His first internship was as a test engineer at the GM Milford Proving Grounds.

The PSGC scholarship is awarded annually to Pennsylvania college or university students with outstanding academic records and who are likely to pursue careers in areas of interest to NASA.
