Students at Carl Sandburg Middle School took a very important history lesson from some key local figures on Monday, Sept. 12.

The Sandburg Social Studies Department organized a special program in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

The program titled "Tragedy Creates Unity" reflected on the tragic events of the day, the efforts of Americans as they united together to help the victims, their families and the communities affected. It also offered opportunities for students, staff and community members to participate in helping the local community.

U.S. Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick and Pa. Rep. Frank Farry were two of the guest speakers for the program. Former Sandburg teacher Dean Matthews, who was called into active duty soon after 9/11 to help with the clean up at Ground Zero in New York, was the main speaker.

Representatives from the United Way of Bucks County and the American Red Cross were also present to share opportunities for community service.
