Meyer Helps Falcons Soar 2-0 Start In State Tournament
Cal Ripken Babe Ruth Pennsylvania State Tournament report
Lower Makefield Falcons shortstop Tommy Meyer didn’t sleep well Friday night, in fact he got almost none, as the Pterodactyl-sized butterflies in his belly prevented a quiet slumber.
In the Pennsylvania State Cal Ripken Babe Ruth tournament opener featuring host Pennsbury and the Doylestown Tigers, it was Meyer that raced home in the bottom of the seventh sliding into home just ahead of the tag to give the Falcons a 7-6 come from behind win.
Meyer had previously scored a go ahead run, after doubling in the bottom of the fifth, before Doylestown knotted the game at six on a two out RBI single by Mike Sigley, scoring Carson Schweitzer, who had walked in the top of the sixth.

After a scoreless at bat by the Tigers, Meyer roped a double into left center with two down and was promptly followed by catcher Justin Fogel, who crushed a ball into the gap allowing Meyer to race home with the winning tally as he slid under the tag of the Doylestown catcher Pearson Kerrigan, who was doing a great job of blocking the plate.
"All I could think about when Justin hit the ball was getting home," said Meyer, who was 3-for-4. "I knew coach was going to send me home. I just wanted to make sure I got there. This is awesome. This is the most exciting that has ever happened to me playing baseball so far. I couldn't sleep last night and couldn't wait to get here today."

"I was just trying to hit it hard," Fogel said. "He gave me a medium fast ball, hard but not too hard and I was able to hit it pretty well. I knew they would send Tommy. This is pretty exciting. I’m already looking forward to our next game."
"That was a huge win for us," said Pennsbury manager Larry Hamacher, in his ninth year at the helm. "They beat us pretty handily during the season so to come back and win this game was big. They are a very good team."
Hamacher added, "We had already told Tommy if it was hit and made it to the outfield that he was going home. We wanted to go for the win right there. He didn’t even have to look at me. He knew he was going."
In the second game of the day, Pennsbury beat Ridley 12-1 with Meyer, Fogel, Andrew Hamacher, Matt Pilla and Kevin Meachum, who pitched and got the opening round win, combined for 10 hits and seven bases on balls to stake the host squad to a 2-0 start in the tournament.
