Rain, Rain, Go Away!

Living in our area gives us a seasonal advantage.

One of my clients moved here from Florida and told me that the reason he picked the Philadelphia area to relocate was the weather. Yes, really. His company is Internet-based so he could live anywhere in the country he wanted to. He didn’t have family here. He honestly picked this area based on our weather.

As I was showing him houses, I thought over and over why would someone want to move from sunny Florida? If I lived in Florida I would love the weather. The question begged an answer. “So, why in the world would you pick this weather over sunny Florida?” I asked him.

He went on to explain that when he was ready to move he looked at the map of the United States and decided he would like to be close enough to the ocean to visit but he didn’t want the predictable heat of Florida anymore. “Besides,” he complained, “The hurricanes!”

He didn’t want to live in the South because of the hurricanes, tornados and storms. He ruled out Seattle because of the rain -- I get that. He couldn't even think of California because of the possible earthquakes. He nixed the Northeast because of the polarizing winters. He picked here because of our weather. You see, our weather is not intense -- it’s not too much or too little instead it changes predictably with the seasons.

No, it’s not sunny every day. But we thoughtlessly experience a wonderful change of seasons here. It’s cold in the winter, but not Fargo cold. It’s hot in the summer, but not Houston hot. Yea, it rains, but it’s not Seattle. We experience changes in our weather, but not extreme weather. Of course we complain. Especially after a week of rain. Next week, however, it will be sunny again and in no time we’ll be digging out our cars from under the snow again come January.

Be thankful for our weather here. Even a week of rain!
