This year gold and platinum artists did more than sell, they reinvented themselves.
Over the past few years, the music industry as a whole has seen a steady decline in overall sales of CDs. The main culprit -- illegal downloading -- has taken huge chunks of profit out of a once consistently thriving business. Record labels folding, merging or being absorbed in acquisitions due to loss in sales revenue has brought the total number of major labels to just four: EMI Group, Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment. In addition, the number of artists occupying the rare air of a gold or platinum disc has steadily decreased much like CD sales. However, while some are still reaching that plateau, most are not.
