Student volunteers from Students Against Destructive Decisions (S.A.D.D) recently held a Christmas card campaign to support our troops serving in Afghanistan and wounded warriors at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Students filled out Christmas cards with a nice note or picture and a wish for a wonderful holiday season. All students expressed their thanks to the service member for their service to our country and wished them a speedy return to their families.

Students and staff took time to mark the 224th anniversary of our nation's founding document. The Social Studies Department of Carl Sandburg Middle School proudly celebrated Constitution Day 2011 -- Sept. 17, 2011 -- with a special program for all students and staff members on Friday, Sept. 16. The National Constitution Center's Traveling History Program presented the "Bill of Rights Show." The show educated students on the Bill of Rights and its creation in a fast-paced, interactive, question and answer show. The students also met James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson as they debated about basic freedoms and the amendments that protect citizens' rights today. Each grade level had its own special assembly.

Students at Carl Sandburg Middle School took a very important history lesson from some key local figures on Monday, Sept. 12. The Sandburg Social Studies Department organized a special program in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. The program titled "Tragedy Creates Unity" reflected on the tragic events of the day, the efforts of Americans as they united together to help the victims, their families and the communities affected. It also offered opportunities for students, staff and community members to participate in helping the local community. U.S. Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick and Pa. Rep.
