The Brunette Lucy

Lenten Traditions

Lucy's family gives up meat for Lent, with mixed results.

I wasn’t raised Catholic, but my husband was. His mom, Gretchen, is a devout Catholic so we’re raising the kids in the church. She’s the epitome of a mom and spiritual leader. If the kids turn out even a little bit like her, I’ll be happy. Gretchen is so devoted to her faith, she prays the rosary many times during the day. As such, she has rosaries, which we’ve lovingly nicknamed “God beads,” in every room in her house. She also has quite the impressive stash all over our family business. We made up a quip derived from the old H&R Block commercial – when Gretchen prays, God listens. Each afternoon, she takes a break and goes into the lounge to pray. She uses the rosary so often, she’s broken at least 10 in the last two years. For Christmas…

Coroner: Bevilacqua Died of Natural Causes

"No relationship" between Philadelphia judge's competency ruling and death of the former Cardinal.

Former Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua died of natural causes, Montgomery County Coroner Walter I. Hofman said Thursday afternoon. Hofman said he found no evidence of strangulation, suffocation, or other types of wounds or injuries on Bevilacqua's body. Bevilacqua was on several medications, which Hofman said were found in the body in expected amounts, allowing for irregularities caused by the introduction of embalming fluid. Bevilacqua's body was examined after it had been prepared for interment by an Upper Darby funeral home. The official cause of death was listed as arteriosclerotic heart disease, Hofman said. "Elderly people with pre-existing diseases often die quite suddenly," Hofman said. Bevilacqua died on Jan. 31 in Wynnewood at the …

Elements of New Contract Outlined By Archdiocese

With an agreement reached, the archdiocese says the new contact will improve educational excellence.

Today is back to business as usual for the 17 high schools in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia that were closed since last week due to a teacher's strike. All the teachers returned to the classroom after coming to an agreement with the diocese regarding stalled contract negotiations Monday.  "Our teachers could not be happier to head back into the classrooms," Rita Schwartz, president of Local 1776, the teacher's union, said in a press release. "We've been waiting a long time for this day and we are relieved that it is finally here." Monday's membership meeting, where the teacher's voted on the tentative agreement, lasted two hours and outlined the agreement in detail, the release continued, adding that included language regarding job …

The statement goes on to say that the parents believe they were influential in Monday's settlement. "We know both sides are well aware of our efforts, our considerable membership numbers and our call to withhold tuition payments until the kids were back in school," it continued, adding that it is refraining from commenting on the terms of the agreement becuase …

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the teacher's union have reached a tentative agreement, a joint statement from the teacher's union and the archdiocese stated.

After nearly two weeks of striking, it seems the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and Local 1776, the union representing the more than 700 Catholic high school teachers, have reached a tentative agreement, a representative from the union stated. Details of the new contract have not been released. According to a release from CPR, …

Catholic Teachers Go On Strike

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia made the announcement Tuesday.

Teachers at the city's Catholic institutions have gone on strike. The Archdiocese of Philadelphia said in a statement that its negotiations with the teachers' union -- called the Association of Catholic Teachers -- that represents the educators broke off early Tuesday morning. School starts on Wednesday. After the two sides couldn't agree on a contract, according to the Archdiocese, union officials walked away from the negotiating table, saying that the new contract offered wasn't sufficient. "I think, overall, the proposals that the system originally presented to us were very much anti-teacher and anti-union proposals," union Vice President Irene Tori said Tuesday afternoon. "They also wanted to strip us of many of the working conditions …

Meaning Behind Ash Wednesday

Wednesday Marks Beginning Of Easter Season For Christians

For those of the Christian faith Wednesday marked the beginning of the Easter season. Catholics in went in droves to their parishes to don the distinctive mark on their forehead: A cross made of ash. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. It is seen as a time of remembrance and sacrifice to Christians and represents the period of time the Bible says Jesus spent fasting in the desert. Christian churchgoers spent the day fasting, or the act of ritually abstaining from food or drink. The first day of Lent follows Shrove Tuesday, more commonly known as Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday. Mardi Gras marks the end of the one week celebration before the beginning of Lent, referred to as Carnival. Carnival traditionally involves a public celebration with …
