Fairless Hills Shop Sells Winning Powerball Ticket Worth $50 Million

The winner has not yet come forward publicly. Patch talked with the store owner.

Thursday started like any other day for Levittown News & Tobacco owner Rakesh “Rocky” Raina. It was a phone call during the Fairless Hills residents morning shave that changed the course of the day. “I was shaving when the lottery rep. called me and told me someone hit the Powerball,” he said. His wife, Naina, said her husband did not believe the lottery representative and her supervisor followed up to confirm that a lucky customer had matched the numbers and had won the $50 million dollar prize. The jackpot-winning Powerball ticket from Wednesday’s drawing  correctly matched all five white balls, 13-17-19-27-38, and the red Powerball 12, the lottery commission said in a statement. Store employees said no one has come in yet to claim the …

Crumbling Bridge to Be Fixed

Falls Township is expected to fix a deteriorating bridge on South Olds Boulevard in 2013.

Barricades block a portion of South Old Boulevard and its sidewalk that have begun to crumble after decades of use. By next year, Falls Township hopes to have the road fixed and fully open to motorists and pedestrians. The Board of Supervisors recently approved a motion to advertise their intent to hire Bensalem's BrightLine Construction at $336,173 to fix the roadway and culvert that runs below. The bridge, located between Parkway Avenue and Southway Drive, has been crumbling for months and work on it has been delayed by previous bids which were considered to be "exuberantly high," Chairman Bob Harvie said. Falls Township went out for new bids and was pleased to discover lower pricetag for the project, officials said. The project is …

It's gotten so bad that minor repairs to a small bridge by the municipal authority over it has become news.Is this news because Falls let it crumble in the first place,or because someone is finally doing some work on the infrastructure?   more ›

Cubby the Pomeranian Passes Away

Letter to the Editor: Days after being reunited with the family Cubby missed for 8 months, the Pomeranian passed away over the weekend.

Thank you so much for the story of Cubby. He belongs to my daughter Kristin Quinlan. I am so pleased you captured the joy she felt at being reunited with Cubby. She and her family were devastated when he disappeared. She searched for him day and night and was sent many well meaning but false leads. Unfortunately, our hearts break as I have to let you know, Cubby, who was seemingly well on the mend, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly yesterday. With the help of some very kind people, I was able to make arrangements for his cremation. And- she has your story to keep the memory forever in her heart. As sad as this news is, my brave daughter sees this as the final gift of being with Cubby one more day before he left this world. She feels …

I followed the Facebook posts the day Cubby was found and was so proud of everyone who tried to help find his owner. When he was reunited with his family I was just thrilled. I am very sad today to read of his passing, but Colleen's letter was filled with such love and honor for Cubby that I can be sad and uplifted at the same time by the miracle gift given to Cubby and his family. Imagine how …   more ›

After 8 Months Missing, Fairless Hills Owner & Pooch Reunited

Cubby was found Wednesday at the intersection of Trenton and Elmwood roads in Falls Township. On Thursday, SPCA officials discovered the dog had been missing from home for months.

Cubby the Pomeranian was found injured and alone Wednesday morning at intersection of Elmwood and Trenton roads in the Fairless Hills section of Falls Township.  SPCA human officer Nikki Thompson worked Wednesday and much of Thursday to try to connect the small dog with its owner. By Thursday afternoon, the dog was reunited with it's owner, who had been missing the 8-year-old dog since it disappeared in June.  Kristin Quinlan, Cubby's owner, told Thompson the dog disappeared from the yard of her Fairless Hills home in June. Quinlan was not sure if the dog was let out of the fenced in yard by mistake or snatched. Both the owner and Thompson were not sure where the dog, which appeared well kept, had been for the past several months. Cubby …

Hurricane Sandy

Trees Cause Heavy Damage in Falls

The Thornridge section of Levittown was devastated by falling trees during Hurricane Sandy.

“It was a night in hell. It was awful.” Those are the words of a middle-aged female Twisting Lane resident. Twisting Lane and the rest of the Thornridge section of Falls Township were ravaged Monday night by Hurricane Sandy. Residents said a public works official told them more than 25 large trees toppled over in the neighborhood. Trees rested upon houses and atop cars. "We were standing in front of my brother-in-law's house, watching the tree fall down on my daughter's car, which is completely devastated,” Sue Mirsch told 6ABC. In the backyard of one home, a large tree fell and took down power lines and several fences. Township crews and private contractors worked throughout the day to clear the roads of the fallen trees. According to …

Not All Customers Get Clothes Back from Dry Cleaners

The county is working to help hundreds of people get their garments back from the business that closed recently without warning.

Hundreds of people lined up outside Payless Dry Cleaners Saturday morning to attempt to retrieve clothes they dropped off at 150 Lincoln Highway in Fairless Hills before the location closed unexpectedly last week. One woman, a Langhorne resident, said she watched as another woman rummaged through a bin looking for her mother’s wedding dress. In the end, the woman found it. However, many were not so lucky on Saturday. Bucks County consumer investigator Lynn Hanes said the dry cleaners and tailoring shop had clothes everywhere. Inside garments hung from racks and sat piled in bins. Hanes told Patch and customers that it might take a little while for all the clothes to be sorted out and given to their respective owners. The Bucks County …

Why do businesses do this? Why don't they just call customers, tell them they'll be closing and to come get their clothes, clean or not, and not take any more customers! What's so hard about that? Even if people couldn't get their money back, I'm sure they'd be happy to get their clothes back.   more ›
