Pennsbury High School graduate and standout heads to NBA as 50th overall pick in draft.
Most potential NBA draftees like to spend draft night with family and friends, but not Lavoy Allen. He wanted to watch the draft alone. Unsure if he’d even be picked, Allen looked on nervously and anxiously as 49 players were taken ahead of him. Finally, with the 50th overall pick, the Philadelphia 76ers selected the former Pennsbury High School standout. “I was a little nervous, but once the Sixers picked me I got a lot of phone calls,” the softspoken Allen said during a press conference on Friday afternoon. Philadelphia 76ers General Manager Ed Stefanski explained why the team chose the local Temple product. “If Lavoy can rebound and defend, and that’s what you get, we’ll be very happy with that,” Stefanski said. “We know he can defend …

Thousands of spectators are expected to take part in festivities leading up to what Reader’s Digest has called the “Best Prom in America.” A public walk-through at Pennsbury High School takes place from 12 p.m. until 2:45 p.m. Saturday. It will be held at the school’s East campus located at 705 Hood Boulevard in Fairless Hills. “We invite you to share in the excitement of this unique high school event that annually brings together an entire community,” Pennsbury Communication Coordinator Ann Langtry said. Hundreds of students, faculty, parents and volunteers worked tirelessly for months to create the façade, and worked from after school Friday until early Saturday morning to put up the decorations. “The Pennsbury senior prom culminates …

“I wanna run through the halls of my high school. I wanna scream at the top of my lungs,” sang Grammy-Award winning John Mayer to a gymnasium full of seniors at Pennsbury High School East Campus on May 16, 2004. Mayer performed for Pennsbury’s Senior Prom after the persistent efforts of student Bob Costa, class of 2004. It has since been dubbed Best Prom in America by Reader’s Digest and is the subject of Wonderland, a book by Michael Bamberger. The bar was set high in 2004. Since that epic night, students of PHS, as well as the entire community, anticipate big names to grace the Pennsbury stage. Each year, expectations are high and the school delivers. Rapper and PHS alum Asher Roth returned to his alma mater for Prom 2007. Popular …

Monday through Thursday every week leading up to Pennsbury High School’s Prom, many juniors and seniors come together and work on colossal murals and three-dimensional objects to decorate the entire school. “It’s a truly inspirational sight, seeing such a big school come together as one unit and create one single amazing and unforgettable night,” Chris Hunter said. Hunter is a great baseball player on the Falcon baseball team, an active member of the Pink Ribbon Club, and a well-known young man at Pennsbury. He couldn’t have defined any better what prom committee is all about. Caroline Crouch is the prom chair and coordinator of the hallways that lead into the gym. “We have been at constant work on this prom since the last one ended. We …

“I hope saying yes to me will be a piece of cake!” That is how senior Rachael McCleary was asked to PHS Prom by class president Gabe Hirsch. “Poor Gabe brought me a cake and the wind kept blowing out the candles and my dad pulled in the driveway as Gabe was kneeling down trying to relight the candles and asked, ‘Um, can I help you?’” Mrs. McCleary also came to the door to find out what was going on, but Gabe eventually got to Rachael and she said, “Yes.” Although it didn’t go as planned, the two will always remember this unconventional proposal. A simple “Will you go to prom with me?” doesn’t quite do it anymore, at least not at Pennsbury High School. Like the rest of the production that is Pennsbury Prom, asking someone has evolved into…

Parents and community volunteers are the backbone of the Pennsbury High School Senior Prom—each night from January to May, they volunteer their time to create the prom's backdrop of murals.
Pennsbury High School's legendary Senior Prom 2011, The Bucket List, is only weeks away. On May 14, students will travel in floats, funny cars, golf carts, maybe even a hot air balloon as they participate in the prom parade that leads up to the actual prom. Once they enter the prom, held at PHS East, they'll be transported into a fantastic dream-like atmosphere of amazing sites and thrilling adventures from around the world. This year's prom theme, The Bucket List, involves murals depicting the Grand Canyon, New Year's Eve at Times Square, Mardi Gras and many others. The lobby will focus on an African Safari theme. The parents and community volunteers have been meeting each night since early January to prepare murals that will cover the …

I wish other high schools would follow suit and hold proms in their high schools instead of fighting the traffic and going to Center City. Neshaminy has the perfect set up. Just do it.   more ›
