Pa. Voter ID Law On Hold Until After Presidential Election

Judge Robert Simpson ruled Tuesday that implementation of Pennsylvania's new Voter ID law be put on hold until after the Nov. 6 general election.

A judge ruled today that Pennsylvania's tough new Voter ID Law should be put on hold until after the Nov. 6 general election, according to an Associated Press report. The ruling can be appealed to the state Supreme Court, which said it would expedite any further action in the case since Election Day is just five weeks away. Do you agree with the ruling? Tell us in the comments section below. Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson heard two days of testimony last week, as directed by the Supreme Court, to determine whether the state has made it easy enough to get a photo ID in order to vote. Opponents say the law, and the process to get an ID, disenfranchises voters. Supporters say the law will prevent voter fraud - but that justification …

PennDOT, PA Make Getting ID to Vote Easier

Proof of residency will no longer be required for the new ID process.

Getting identification in order to vote, just got even easier. The Pennsylvania Departments of Transportation and State this week announced voters can choose to receive either secure PennDOT IDs, or Department of State voting-only ID cards, when visiting a PennDOT driver license center to obtain photo ID to vote under the state's new voter ID law. The agencies also announced that, in order to get the DOS voter ID card, an individual need only give his name, date of birth, social security number, and address; however, proof of residence is not required. PennDOT will then, while the individual is at the driver license center, confirm with the Department of State that the applicant is a registered voter. Upon confirmation, the applicant …

Some College IDs Not Compliant with Pa. Voter ID Law

Bucks County Community College student IDs cannot be used at the polls because they don't have a photo or expiration date.

While Pennsylvania's new voter ID law is still being tossed about in the courts (Judge Robert Simpson has scheduled a hearing today in response to a state Supreme Court ruling last week), community activists, agencies and even local governments are scrambling to make sure registered voters have the necessary ID.  One of those approved forms of photo ID is a current student ID from an accredited state public or private institution of higher learning as long as it contains the student's name, photo and a current expiration date. While most colleges and universities issue student IDs, not all are in compliance with the new law. According to PennPIRG, a state consumer advocacy group, the most common missing element is an expiration date. Bucks…

Pa. Voter ID Sent Back to Lower Court

A judge now has until Oct. 2 to issue a new opinion on Pennsylvania's Voter ID challenge following a state Supreme Court ruling Tuesday.

Pennsylvania's Supreme Court today sent a challenge to the state's new Voter ID law back to a lower court with instructions for that judge to reconsider issuing an injunction. It's not yet clear how the court decision will affect or possibly block implementation of the law for the Nov. 6 general election, according to a Philly.com report. The decision gave Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson -- a former Northampton County judge and a Nazareth resident -- until Oct. 2 to file a new opinion on the case. Simpson upheld the law last month. The Supreme Court instructed Simpson "to consider whether the procedures being used for deployment" of ID cards comports with the law as written -- which, in testimony before the Supreme Court, appeared …

Court Upholds Pennsylvania's Voter ID Law

Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson said he will not stop the state's Voter ID law.

Commonwealth Court Judge Judge Robert Simpson said Wednesday morning that he will not grant an injunction that would have stopped Pennsylvania's controversial voter identification law from going into effect. The challenge to the law was brought by voter advocacy groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union and the NAACP. ACLU attorney Witold J. Walczak told The Washington Post that the case isn't over. “It’s why they make appeals courts.” Is this good or bad for Pennsylvania? Leave a comment. Opponents are expected to file an appeal within a day or two to the state Supreme Court as the Nov. 6 presidential election looms, according to the Associated Press. Pennsylvania passed a law in March requiring all registered voters to …

I've researching the PA Commonwealth Court Judge - Robert E. Simpson Jr. - whose will determine whether the PA Voter ID is LEGAL. From what I can find my evaluation is that he will find the PA Voter ID an infringement on the legal right to vote as written in the PA Constitution. Pa.’s Voter ID Law: What’s the big Deal?

Here’s a guide to everything you ever wanted to know about Pennsylvania’s Voter ID law.

In March, Pennsylvania passed a law requiring all registered voters to show a valid and “acceptable” photo ID before voting. This is one of the strictest voter ID laws in the nation. Voter advocacy groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union and the NAACP, challenged the new requirement and closed their arguments in Commonwealth Court Thursday. Across the country, 30 states have enacted some type of voter ID reform and it has become a hot button issue in an election year. Pennsylvania is no exception. Supporters say the laws prevent voter fraud; critics say the laws are a political tricks to disenfranchise voters. Here is a guide to the debate: According to proponents of the law, including State Senator Daryl Metcalfe (R-12th …
