A judge ruled today that Pennsylvania's tough new Voter ID Law should be put on hold until after the Nov. 6 general election, according to an Associated Press report. It's now up to the Commonwealth to prove that no voters will be disenfranchised by a controversial new Voter ID law after Tuesday's Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruling. The high court sent a challenge to the law back down to Commonwwealth Court where a judge has until Oct. 2 to determine if adequate measures are in place for voters to get a free photo ID in time for the Nov. 6 general election Three GOP and one Democratic justice made up the 4-2 majority in the ruling. Pennsylvania's Supreme Court today sent a challenge to the state's new Voter ID law back to a lower court with instructions for that judge to reconsider issuing an injunction. It's not yet clear how the court decision will affect or possibly block implementation of the law for the Nov. 6 general election, according to a Philly.com report. The decision gave Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson -- a former Northampton County judge and a Nazareth resident -- until Oct. 2 to file a new opinion on the case. Simpson upheld the law last month. Commonwealth Court Judge Judge Robert Simpson said Wednesday morning that he will not grant an injunction that would have stopped Pennsylvania's controversial voter identification law from going into effect. The challenge to the law was brought by voter advocacy groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union and the NAACP. ACLU attorney Witold J. Bucks County Commissioner Diane Ellis-Marseglia may not be able to use a voting booth in the November elections thanks to the state’s new voter ID law, which is perhaps the most strict in the entire country. The problem is Ellis-Marseglia’s name on her voter registration does not match the name on her driver’s license. "In my case, it is an issue of a driver's license without a middle initial," she said in an email. Her driver's license lists her full name as "Diane Marseglia," but her voter registration reads " Diane M. E. Marseglia." State Rep. Parker holds info session on new Voter ID Law.
Though not happy about the new state law that requires voters to bring IDs to the polls, state Rep. Cherelle Parker (D-200) is trying to be proactive. The chair for the Philadelphia Delegation in the state House of Representatives hosted a community meeting last week to get the FAQs answered and educate city and suburban leaders so they can spread info on the law. "After the law was passed, while we're not pleased at all with it... we're dealing with it and need to know how to get prepared," Parker said.
