Hearing on Village Park Closure Held

A hearing on the possible closure of Village Park Elementary School was held recently. What's your take?

Before the Pennsbury School Board, administrators and members of the local community, Marta Grothman recalled her fond memories of attending Village Park Elementary School in the Levittown section of Falls. She recollected about her first day and taking part in the school’s opening ceremony. She recalled her brown pigtail hairstyle and all of her teachers. Grothman, who currently is a music instructor at the school, was one of roughly a dozen people who spoke during public comment at Thursday night’s public hearing on the likely closure of the Unity Drive school. Other parents testified about the helpful and nurturing staff. Some praised the close-knit community that surrounds the school, where a large segments of students walk to and from…

Public Hearing on Elementary School Closure to be Held Thursday

A meeting on the possible closure of one Levittown elementary school will be the focus of a public meeting Thursday night.

A public hearing on the possible closure of Village Park Elementary School is set for Thursday night in Falls Township. According to the Pennsbury School District, the hearing will take place beginning at 7 p.m. at the west campus of the high school. The Elementary Enrollment and Space Utilization Committee told the school board in the beginning of the month they decided the Unity Drive school should be closed as the school system looks to redistrict and cut cost. The committee looked at project enrollment numbers, birth rates and building capacities before making their recommendation. In December, the committee held a lengthy discussion about how much money the district could save if it closed either Village Park or Fallsington Elementary…

If they close it WE HAD BETTER see a reduction in our stinking taxes !! I am tired of paying $5400 a year in school taxes for a CRAP school system. you can be sure I WILL NOT remain in levittown for much longer. I can't afford levittown. Bristol taxes are less than HALF what taxes are in Levittown.   more ›

Langhorne Borough Council Opposes Neshaminy School Closings

Langhorne Borough Council member Kathy Horwatt told the Neshaminy School Board Tuesday night that the council opposes the closing of Oliver Heckman Elementary.

Many residents and parents voiced their opposition to closing some elementary schools to the Neshaminy School Board Tuesday night, but they aren't the only ones against the potential closures. Langhorne Borough Councilwoman Kathy Horwatt urged the school board not to close Olive Heckman Elementary School, which is located Maple Avenue and Cherry Street in Langhorne Borough. Horwatt stated that the Borough Council has drafted and will approve a resolution formally opposing the closure of the Langhorne Borough elementary school.  According to Bucks Local News, this resolution states that the decision to close Heckman based on declining enrollment "does not adequately recognize the actual use of the total school facilities ... and the …

All good points but it doesn't address: 1) the big picture 2) this consolidation has been discussed since 2006 3) the school district (via all taxpayers in the school district, not just Langhorne Borough) is responsible Basically speaking, you can sit in the back seat or you can drive. You can't do both. Just saying 'NO' without a working alternative isn't the best way to go. There is no question…   more ›

Neshaminy Residents Discuss Potential School Closures

A member of Neshaminy's Citizens Advisory Committee presented information to the school board and public about possibly school closures.

Members of the Neshaminy community and school board  Pete Spera, a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee, presented what the committee looked at in terms of enrollment trends and what the group's final recommendation to the school board was Tuesday night. When presented with two options for school closures and consolidations, the committee went with a third, or hybrid, option of the two. The ultimately recommended closing three elementary schools (Lower Southampton, Oliver Heckman and Samuel Everitt), building a new elementary school at the current Tawanka site on Brownsville Road and adding a larger addition to Pearl Buck Elementary School. This addition, Spera said, would give Neshaminy flexibility when it comes to redistricting as …

we wouldn't have declining enrollment if we stopped playing with the teachers union, and required better results from our teachers/kids. Of course no one with any choice wants to come to Neshaminy. It's been a problem school district as far back as I can remember. What they should do is decentralize the high school and split the district into smaller groups. While I can tolerate the elementary …   more ›

Village Park Elementary School May Close

The Pennsbury School District could save $1 million by shuttering Village Park Elementary School in Falls Township.

The Elementary Enrollment and Space Utilization Committee met at Pennsbury High School last Tuesday and decided to have Superintendent Kevin J. McHugh present a formal recommendation to close Village Park Elementary School before the school board at its Jan. 3, 2013 meeting. Committee meeting minutes show a lengthy discussion about how much money the district could save if it closed either Village Park or Fallsington Elementary School, which is connected to the district administration offices.  Over the next five years, repairs and upgrades to the 75,000-square-foot Village Park are expected to cost up to $2 million. Similar work would cost about $375,000 at 44,000-square-foot Fallsington. The committee discussed what would happen to the …

School Board to Consider Sending Construction Plans to the State

The Neshaminy School Board will consider approving initial plans to send to the state in hopes of receiving funding for construction.

During the Neshaminy School Board's meeting tonight, the board will consider approving sending initial construction plans to the state in order to receive $3.8 million in funding. This decision was delayed after the board couldn't pass a motion to do so at their last meeting. Board President Ritchie Webb voted against the motion, but not because he disapproved of the plan. "I’m all for doing something, we need to do something...but this hasn’t been vetted to the public," Webb said in the board's Aug. 28 meeting. He added that if the situation had been different and the plan had been vetted to the public, he would have supported it last night. However, Oettinger, who heads up the Facilities Ad Hoc committee, said that the board has been …

Neshaminy School Board Delays Construction Funding Decision

The Neshaminy School Board was unable to pass a motion to send plans to the state for the construction of a new school for funding Tuesday night.

The Neshaminy School Board has delayed a decision that could begin the process of building a new school and closing certain schools by two weeks. At the board meeting Tuesday night, the board considered giving its approval to send initial plans to the state in order to qualify for additional funding for the construction and consolidations in the district; however, the board was unable to do this and the motion to do this will be back on the agenda for the Septemeber 11 meeting. The motion Tuesday night received four yes votes from Scott Congdon, Mark Shubin, Anthony Sposato and Bill Oettinger; Ritchie Webb, Irene Boyle and Mike Morris voted against the motion. Board members Susan Cummings and Kim Koutsouradis were not in attendance.  Even …
