SONIC Drive-In Restaurant To Reopen Next Month

New ownership group taking over after January closing

The SONIC drive-in restaurant on Street Road, which opened in 2008 and closed in January, will soon reopen under new ownership and management. The franchise plans to hire 80-100 employees, 20-40 of which will be full time, according to company officials. Don Welsh, one of three members of a SONIC franchise group, said the restaurant will reopen next month. "We're shooting for mid to late May," he said. "We're going to a lot of remodeling," he added. That includes new kitchen equipment, redone bathrooms and new patio furniture. Welsh, a Chester County resident, indicated reopening the Bensalem site was an easy decision for his group, which owns and operates eight other SONICs in Montgomery, Berks and Lancaster counties. "Bensalem is a great…

Doing Business with Parx Casino

Casino hosts LBCCC to explain the best way of starting a business relationship with the casino.

Parx Casino and Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) executives met with members of the Lower Bucks County Chamber of Commerce (LBCCC) Wednesday morning. The gaming officials wanted to let local business people know that Parx and other state casinos want to do business with them. And Parx does plenty of business. “Annually it’s $150 million worth of purchases on things from mustard to slot machines,” said Ron Davis, Parx director of diversity & community development. Parx chief operating officer Gary Luderitz agreed that Parx spends a lot of money and hopes to keep the spending near home. “We understand that these expenditures we make are significant particularly if we can make those expenditures in the local community,” he said. “…

Bites Nearby: Sky Box Sport's Bar

Out with the old, in with the new.

Sky Box Sport's Bar is a sign of evolution. Formerly the location of La Casa Mia Italian Restaurant, the owners stripped out all the tables, chairs and homely brick facades that you come to expect from an Italian restaurant, and replaced it with laser lights, bar stools, giant high definition TVs and even a giant mural of Stenway Park. The aesthetic, while dramatic and comprehensive, is not the most impressive of Sky Box's features. The most impressive thing about Sky Box is that despite all the dramatic changes, it still has kept it's Italian Cuisine sensibilities. La Casa Mia's kitchen was never gutted during the change over, and the food hasn't changed as a result. You can get a variety of high-quality platters and meals. Expect an …

Bristol Township Councilman Calls Resident 'Slithering Coward'

Council President Rick Pluta explodes at meeting over potentially slanderous pamphlet.

A fairly ordinary council meeting Thursday night took a detour into the bizarre when Bristol Township Council President Rick Pluta furiously lashed out over a potentially slanderous pamphlet that he said he discovered was distributed around town. "You are disgraceful. You are disgusting to me," said Pluta as he openly addressed the anonymous author through the room's closed circuit television cameras. WATCH: Thursday's meeting, including Pluta's comments, in its entirety here.  The pamphlet in question was a newsletter that read "Alert: Bad Contractor" and signed by "a concerned citizen." Pluta was the focal point of the paper that called him a cheat, incompetent and accused him of wasting taxpayer money. The letter recommended residents …

State Reminds Cyber Monday Shoppers to Pay Tax

When you purchase items from Amazon or other online retailers, you are supposed to pay a use tax to the state. It's only fair.

Shoppers planning to take advantage of Cyber Monday Internet sales on Nov. 28 are reminded to check receipts for sales tax charges, and save purchase records not reflecting sales tax to facilitate payment of use tax in the new year, Department of Revenue Secretary Dan Meuser said in a release. “Many online retailers do not collect sales tax, and some even falsely advertise that products can be purchased online tax-free,” said Meuser. “When sales tax isn’t collected by the seller on a taxable item or service, it becomes the purchaser’s responsibility – by law – to report and remit use tax.” Though use tax has been on the books since 1953, when sales tax was first codified in Pennsylvania, many taxpayers are unaware of use tax liabilities…

Santa Visits Bucks County to Kickoff TreeFest

Many children were thrilled to see St. Nick in person.

Despite steady rain, many local families visited the Bucks County Visitor Center in Bensalem last night hoping to catch a glimpse of Santa and Mrs. Claus, who dropped by to magically turn on the Christmas lights and take photos with good little boys and girls. Santa arrived via a Bensalem fire engine and thrilled the children in attendance, who also had cookies and apple juice for snacks. All were entertained by Bob Egan playing holiday favorites on the piano. If you didn't make it out last night, Santa will return to take photos with children from 1-3 p.m. on Sundays: Nov. 27, Dec. 4 and Dec. 11. On Dec. 11, Santa will stay for an extra hour until 4 p.m. to take pictures with pets. Be sure to bring your own camera.   In addition to Santa'…

Pairing Wines For Your Thanksgiving Feast

Here are a few simple guidelines that take the mystery out of picking the right wines, including lots of good, local options.

Everyone knows what belongs on the Thanksgiving table - the turkey, the vegetables, the rolls. But when it comes to wine, some people can get intimidated. Never fear, says Kim Graziano, event planner at Chaddsford Winery. "It's such a fun time to try different wines, maybe local wines you haven't tried before," she said. She said the classic dishes like turkey and ham call for a white wine that's crisp, dry and light. Specifically, she suggests looking at a riesling wine, but make sure it's dry. That means a German, Austrian or Alsatian style - check the label on the back. Sauvignon blanc is another good choice. Plus, with a big meal and large crowd, there's a chance to experiment a little, too. "With a bigger group, there is definitely …

Energy Efficient Commercial Lighting Company Announces Plans to Hire Recently Released Veterans

Fallsington company National Energy Solutions, Inc., an industrial and commercial lighting and solar contractor dealing in energy efficient lighting products, on Tuesday announced plans to focus hiring efforts on veterans recently released from duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. NESI, which seeks to maximize energy efficiency and eliminate energy waste in the commercial and industrial environments, will seek out veterans to work in their on-the-ground crews on projects locally and throughout the country.  As a locally and veteran-owned company, NESI leadership feels it is their duty to support local military service men and women who are coming home to Bucks County to make the transition back to civilian life.   "As a veteran of the United …
