Stray Ladder Causes 7-Car Turnpike Accident

All lanes were blocked on the eastbound side of the turnpike from a seven-car accident near the Philmont Avenue overpass.

Alerts went out at approximately 3:15 p.m. Wednesday of a multi-car accident on eastbound Pennsylvania Turnpike near the Philmont Ave. overpass. According to the report, all lanes had been blocked by the crash. NBC-10 reports that a fallen ladder on the turnpike struck several cars and caused others to swerve and crash. Three people have been sent to the hospital, one to Abington Memorial and the other two to Frankford-Torresdale.  As of 4:30 p.m., traffic is getting by the scene, but there is a three-mile backup.

Poll: Should Pa. Raise Turnpike Speed Limit?

State lawmakers might raise the Pennsylvania Turnpike speed limit to 70 miles per hour. Do you support the move?

State lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow the Turnpike Commission to raise the Pennsylvania Turnpike speed limit to 70 miles per hour. The House Transportation Committee recently approved the measure, which would affect sections of both the Northeast Extension and the rest of the turnpike. Supporters of the measure say the change makes sense because vehicles are safer and the turnpike is wider, flatter and straighter thanks to road improvements. There is no timetable for when or if the bill will come to a vote. Turnpike officials say the speed limit change would not be made without additional study and would apply only to some portions of the road. Do you think the speed limit should be raised? Vote in our poll and add your …

PA Turnpike: 10% Cash-Only Toll Increase Next Year

Turnpike customers encouraged to get E-ZPass now to avoid higher tolls in the New Year.

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission reminds customers that fares are set to go up on most of the state's toll roads by 10 percent on Jan. 1, 2012 for cash-paying travelers only. Because electronic-toll rates will not go up, E-ZPass customers will pay about 17 percent less than cash customers, on average, starting next year. (E-ZPass users presently pay 7 percent less, on average, than cash customers on the Pa. Turnpike.) With the new rates -- that will take effect at 12:01 a.m. -- the most-common cash toll for passenger vehicles will increase from $1.10 to $1.25 while the most-common cash toll for a standard commercial-truck classification (Class 5) will rise from $8.95 to $9.85. (The 2012 fares were determined by …

Turnpike Commission Approves 2012 Toll Increase

Cash tolls will increase by 10 percent with E-ZPass tolls to stay the same.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission approved a 2012 rate plan that includes a 10-percent toll increase for cash-paying customers but no rate increase for those who pay with E-ZPass, according to a release. "Implementing a cash-only toll increase generates the revenue we need to satisfy our annual funding obligation to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and it encourages more travelers to sign up for E-ZPass," said Turnpike Commission Chief Executive Officer Roger E. Nutt said in the statement. On January 1, 2012, cash rates will be increased by 10 percent. The increase will be applied to all vehicle classes on all turnpike sections in the area. With the new rates, the most-common cash toll for passenger vehicles will increase from $1.10 to…

Road Work to Close Turnpike Early Sunday Morning

Affected area is between Bensalem and Delaware Valley exits.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission cautions motorists that a seven-mile stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike will be closed in both directions for five hours on Sunday, June 12. The closed portion will be between Bensalem (Exit #351) and Delaware Valley (Exit #358) for overnight work to place steel girders on the bridge that carries Bristol Oxford Valley Road over the Turnpike at milepost 357 in Bensalem. At midnight on until 5 a.m. on Sunday, all eastbound traffic must exit at the Bensalem Interchange and westbound traffic will be diverted off at the Delaware Valley Interchange. Additionally, no traffic will be allowed access to the Turnpike system from Street Road (PA 132) using the new Street Road E-ZPass-Only Interchange. The …

Drivers Beware: Pa. Turnpike Tolls Increase Sunday

E-ZPass motorists will see 3 percent increase, while cash-paying motorists will see 10 percent increase

Drivers beware: Pennsylvania Turnpike tolls increase beginning Sunday. E-ZPass motorists will see a three percent increase, while cash-paying motorists will see a 10 percent increase. Tolls increased effective at 12:01 a.m. Sunday. The annual toll increase is necessary to meet financial obligations, according to the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. The new toll rates were approved on July 13, 2010. A majority of toll dollars collected – 46 percent – are used for capital improvement, 42 percent are used for operating expenses, while 12 percent is used as supplemental funding to Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for non-turnpike projects. See a chart of the breakdown. Officials said this is the eighth toll increase in 70 years of …
