Pa. Voter ID Law On Hold Until After Presidential Election

Judge Robert Simpson ruled Tuesday that implementation of Pennsylvania's new Voter ID law be put on hold until after the Nov. 6 general election.

A judge ruled today that Pennsylvania's tough new Voter ID Law should be put on hold until after the Nov. 6 general election, according to an Associated Press report. The ruling can be appealed to the state Supreme Court, which said it would expedite any further action in the case since Election Day is just five weeks away. Do you agree with the ruling? Tell us in the comments section below. Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson heard two days of testimony last week, as directed by the Supreme Court, to determine whether the state has made it easy enough to get a photo ID in order to vote. Opponents say the law, and the process to get an ID, disenfranchises voters. Supporters say the law will prevent voter fraud - but that justification …

Pennsylvania Makes Changes to Voter ID Law

The Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court had two hearings this week to determine the accessibility of the state’s voter ID law.

By Melissa Daniels | PA Independent HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania officials are playing catch-up in implementing the voter ID law. This week, the state announced two more changes relating to the controversial law, involving the same issues debated in a Harrisburg courtroom. Tuesday and Thursday, Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson heard the case, as directed by the Supreme Court, to determine whether the state has made it easy enough to obtain an ID in order to vote. Opponents say the law, and the process to get an ID, disenfranchises voters. Meanwhile, the state has been negotiating with union workers and changing proof of identification requirements to get the IDs into people’s wallets, part of the effort to get everyone an ID before …

Voter ID laws should be National, not state mandated. It isn't fair for someone to vote in one state for President without ID and in another, not be allowed to vote without ID! Picture ID is supposed to limit voter fraud. How ignorant does one have to be to realize that voter fraud more likely happens via tampering with voting machines than people voting at multiple places or under alias names? …   more ›

Bucks County Commissioner Might Need New ID to Vote

Bucks County Commissioner Diane Ellis-Marseglia’ s has a flawed driver's license that could keep her from voting this fall. Are you on the list?

Bucks County Commissioner Diane Ellis-Marseglia may not be able to use a voting booth in the November elections thanks to the state’s new voter ID law, which is perhaps the most strict in the entire country. The problem is Ellis-Marseglia’s name on her voter registration does not match the name on her driver’s license. "In my case, it is an issue of a driver's license without a middle initial," she said in an email. Her driver's license lists her full name as "Diane Marseglia," but her voter registration reads " Diane M. E. Marseglia." The disparity in Ellis-Marseglia's names caught the attention of Pennsylvania's Department of State, which notified her in an advisory letter two weeks ago, "along with District Attorney Heckler, …

Read the Philadelphia Inquirer story about a former District Attorney who has been trying to correct her name for three months but is in a catch 22 since every government agency she has approached is asking for an ID with her name spelled correctly to give her the documentation she needs to get a proper ID. Everyone who says this is easy has never had to deal with the government bureaucrats who …   more ›

Alternative Ballots: Voter ID Loophole For Seniors, Disabled?

Alternative ballots could be a way for some people to vote without showing their ID.

While we wait for a ruling this week on the controversial Voter ID bill, there appears to be a loophole, according to Philly.com, in the form of the alternative ballot. The alternative ballot is basically an absentee ballot for those with a disability or who are older than 65 and who have a polling place deemed inaccessible by the County Board of Elections. Although the application for absentee ballot now asks for your drivers license number, Social Security number or other acceptable form of identification, the alternative ballot application does not ask for that. If you are planning on voting by absentee ballot or alternative ballot, be sure to plan ahead. Applications for either must be received no later than 5 p.m. on Oct. 30 and the …

How Will PA Spread Voter ID Word?

State Rep. Parker holds info session on new Voter ID Law.

Though not happy about the new state law that requires voters to bring IDs to the polls, state Rep. Cherelle Parker (D-200) is trying to be proactive. The chair for the Philadelphia Delegation in the state House of Representatives hosted a community meeting last week to get the FAQs answered and educate city and suburban leaders so they can spread info on the law. "After the law was passed, while we're not pleased at all with it... we're dealing with it and need to know how to get prepared," Parker said. Held at Laborers' Local #332 Union Hall at 13th and Wallace Streets, the August 1 midday meeting brought together other state representatives, media members, nonprofit association employees and city government staff to learn directly …

Voter ID Fight Heads to Commonwealth Court

Civil rights groups are seeking an injunction against the law that requires voters to have photo ID when they go to the polls in November.

Since its passage four months ago, Pennsylvania's Voter ID law has been a controversial topic throughout the state and on the Web. Previous stories about the issue on Patch.com sites have featured passionate replies from commenters on both sides. "I find this to be a form of voter suppression targeting the elderly and disabled," user Franz Perl wrote. "These groups will have the hardest time getting to a DMV center, most do not drive." Commenter Pete Krenshaw replied, "Bottom line - we need to make sure the integrity of the voting process is preserved regardless of political affiliation. So everyone who wants to vote has until November to obtain an acceptable form of ID. It's time to get it done." Supporters and detractors of …
