A total of 15 high school students were honored by the YWCA of Bucks County during the Thursday evening event.
Students from Pennsbury and Truman high schools were among 15 Bucks County high school students honored for their volunteer efforts. The honors took place at the YWCA's Teen Volunteer of the Year Awards banquet at Ann’s Choice in Warminster Thursday evening. Quakertown Community High School student and National Honor Society member Anya Kelly was named the county’s top teen volunteer during the ceremony. She has worked extensively with China Care, a group which helps orphans deemed by their people as "being unadoptable." Over the past three years, Anya has helped raise over $7,000 for the group and even traveled to Asia to volunteer. Trisha Odoms was named the new Chief Executive Officer of the YWCA. Odoms replaces Lorna Michelson, Ph.D., who served in the role for more than eight years, retiring in September 2011, according to a news release. The appointment was effective on Jan. 24. Through the Holiday Hearts Program, YWCA Bucks County reaches out to the many needy families it serves during the year and buys small gifts and necessities for children participating in Homework Zones, Early Academic Intervention Programs, Pre-Kindergarten classes, Saturday Camp and other YWCA Youth Services academic enrichment and life skills learning initiatives. The Connelly foundation is one of the most involved philanthropic educational groups. They always support my wife's grade school, which is still going strong in the heart of Kensington in Philadelphia!!!!
