Students from Pennsbury and Truman high schools were among 15 Bucks County high school students honored for their volunteer efforts. The honors took place at the YWCA's Teen Volunteer of the Year Awards banquet at Ann’s Choice in Warminster Thursday evening. Quakertown Community High School student and National Honor Society member Anya Kelly was named the county’s top teen volunteer during the ceremony. She has worked extensively with China Care, a group which helps orphans deemed by their people as "being unadoptable." Over the past three years, Anya has helped raise over $7,000 for the group and even traveled to Asia to volunteer. Trisha Odoms was named the new Chief Executive Officer of the YWCA. Odoms replaces Lorna Michelson, Ph.D., who served in the role for more than eight years, retiring in September 2011, according to a news release. The appointment was effective on Jan. 24. "Trisha Odoms brings 14 years of senior nonprofit management experience to YWCA Bucks County at a time when significant innovation and growth is needed to meet an ever-increasing demand for human and social services within the communities we serve," said Anne Coe, president of the YWCA Bucks County Board of Directors. The YWCA Bucks County Holiday Hearts Program is dedicated to making the holiday season happy for hundreds of underserved children in Bucks County who are participating in a variety of YWCA Youth Services programs. Through the Holiday Hearts Program, YWCA Bucks County reaches out to the many needy families it serves during the year and buys small gifts and necessities for children participating in Homework Zones, Early Academic Intervention Programs, Pre-Kindergarten classes, Saturday Camp and other YWCA Youth Services academic enrichment and life skills learning initiatives. YWCA Bucks County has received a $10,000 grant from the Connelly Foundation, of West Conshohocken, in support of its YWCA Healthy Kids/Healthy Communities Program. Healthy Kids/Healthy Communities is dedicated to educational programming to underserved youth and families in Bucks County on the importance of proper nutrition and physical fitness in building healthy lifestyles. YWCA Bucks County will hold its second Live Comedy Night fundraiser of the year. The event takes place Friday, Nov. 4 from 7 p.m. to midnight at Twining Hall at the Trevose Fire Company on 4900 E. Street Road in Trevose. According to a news release, the evening features nationally-acclaimed headliner Mike Eagan, a long-time audience favorite at America’s premier comedy nightclubs including Catch A Rising Star, Dangerfield’s and the Comic Strip in New York City as well as at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles. Campers capped the summer of educational enrichment and life skills learning activities with a fun-filled talent show
YWCA Foxwood Manor Summer Camp -- one of five YWCA summer camps -- capped the summer of educational enrichment and life skills learning activities with a fun-filled talent show Thursday afternoon. The title of the program was "Aloha grab a coconut and chill." An audience of family members, friends, area dignitaries, the general public and YWCA staff watched the performance. Levittown resident Kim Walker has been elected to YWCA Bucks County’s Board of Directors, according to a news release. Walker has worked in administrative and accounting positions more than 25 years, according to a news release. She also has considerable experience in planning projects for non-profit and community organizations. Part-Lenape Indian and a member of the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania, Walker is also an artist and makes Native American jewelry and other items for display and sale at art shows, museums, and Native American festivals around the region. The Connelly foundation is one of the most involved philanthropic educational groups.
