Officials Meet to Lay Groundwork for New Falls Road Sidewalks

Progresses made but a number of challenges still need to be negotiated.

As Patch reported last month, Sharon Rearick’s online petition in honor of her son John, a victim of hit-and-run accident on New Falls Rd, created a groundswell of support for the installation of safe walkways along New Falls Road in Middletown and Bristol townships. The outcry led to a meeting coordinated by state Sen. Tommy Tomlinson (R-6) on Thursday at the senator's offices in Langhorne. Attending were state Rep. Tina Davis’ (D -141) Chief of Staff Bryan Allen, Bristol Township Manager Bill McCauley, Middletown Township’s Director of Parks and Recreation Debby Lemanna and PennDOT Bucks County Maintenance Manager Calvin Morrison. Personally a road with 4 lanes and a turning lane in the middle with no sidewalks? Who decided to make the road like this with no safe pedestrian traffic walkway? I some times think Penndot has no real brains behind it, when they design a road. And this road is totally dangerous. I wouldnt let my daughter walk on that road if it was the last thing she had to do to save my LIFE!!! Again I feel For…   more ›

Why Judge Simpson Delayed Voter ID Law

A look at the injunction against the Voter ID Law.

Judge Robert Simpson issued a preliminary injunction Tuesday morning, halting certain aspects of the Voter ID Law from impacting the November presidential election. While the decision does not repeal the law that requires citizens to show photo identification to vote, if upheld, the ruling allows registered voters to cast ballots without an ID.  To issue an injunction on the law, Simpson was tasked to consider two questions—does the issuance of IDs "comport with liberal access" that the General Assembly required, and will no voter disenfranchisement exist if the law is implemented this fall? Liberal Access? In returning the case to Simpson, the commonwealth's Supreme Court said then-current procedures were "contrary" to liberal access—a …

New Law Adds Penalties To Danger Behind Barricades

Driving around a 'Road Closed' sign could mean a fine and points on your driving record.

It doesn’t take a visit from severe weather systems Leslie or Michael to bring potential flooding or other emergency conditions to the Delaware Valley. And the next time they hit, going around those Road Closed barricades could mean more than the implied danger ahead. A new state law imposing stiff penalties on motorists who ignore “road closed” or other safety warning signs and devices is now in effect, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation said this week. Act 114, signed on July 5 by Gov. Tom Corbett, reinforces the critical need for all drivers to obey traffic control signs. The law aims to increase safety for motorists and emergency responders in areas where flooding or other hazardous conditions exist. “Too often, motorists …

PennDOT Officials Address Concerns About Bridge Closure

The West Maple Avenue Bridge that connects Lower Southampton and Middletown is expected to close for about year.

A handful of local residents and business owners came to a community information meeting held by PennDOT at the Lower Southampton Township building to get more information on the impending West Maple Avenue bridge replacement project. The $6 million project is expected to close the busy and structurally deficient bridge, which crosses the Neshaminy Creek and connects Lower Southampton and Middletown, for about one year, beginning in Spring 2013, according to PennDOT. The meeting was mostly populated with owners of businesses on Maple Avenue closest to the nearly 60-year-old bridge, whose businesses are likely to suffer from the road closures and detours. “This is going to affect business,” said Jim McGovern, owner of All Pro Auto Service …

Major Bridge Reconstruction to Begin This Spring

A major bridge reconstruction project is slated to begin in Lower Southampton this spring.

This spring, PennDOT will begin a major bridge reconstruction project in Lower Southampton that will take up to 18 months to complete. PennDOT will be tearing down and replacing the Maple Avenue Bridge (Route 213) over the Neshaminy Creek. According to a notice from PennDOT on the township website, this bridge, which is located on the border of Lower Southampton Township and Middletown Township, has "reached the end of its useful life and is in need of replacement before further deterioration adversely affects traffic flow across this important state route." This bridge project will require the road to be closed throughout the reconstruction. The anticipated detour route will use Bristol Road, Brownsville Road and Old Lincoln Highway. …

In defense of the workers....have you ever worked construction? It's very common that one crew needs to be on standby while another completes a task. It seems like a waste of manhours but in the end it's more economical, both in money and time. If the second crew isn't onsite when needed the work stops completely. There are different specialties needed as the work progresses so more than one …   more ›
