I strongly agree with William Brenner. We should be "facilitating" people voting, not setting up hurdles that make it difficult to vote in a Democracy. Those who try and impose these regulations should be ashamed of themselves. It is an attempt to stop poor people ( who often do not have "official " voter ID) from voting. It is an intimidation tactic and is beneath those who love this country   more ›

Pa. Voter ID Law On Hold Until After Presidential Election

Judge Robert Simpson ruled Tuesday that implementation of Pennsylvania's new Voter ID law be put on hold until after the Nov. 6 general election.

A judge ruled today that Pennsylvania's tough new Voter ID Law should be put on hold until after the Nov. 6 general election, according to an Associated Press report. The ruling can be appealed to the state Supreme Court, which said it would expedite any further action in the case since Election Day is just five weeks away. Do you agree with the ruling? Tell us in the comments section below. Commonwealth Court Judge Robert Simpson heard two days of testimony last week, as directed by the Supreme Court, to determine whether the state has made it easy enough to get a photo ID in order to vote. Opponents say the law, and the process to get an ID, disenfranchises voters. Supporters say the law will prevent voter fraud - but that justification …

Some College IDs Not Compliant with Pa. Voter ID Law

Bucks County Community College student IDs cannot be used at the polls because they don't have a photo or expiration date.

While Pennsylvania's new voter ID law is still being tossed about in the courts (Judge Robert Simpson has scheduled a hearing today in response to a state Supreme Court ruling last week), community activists, agencies and even local governments are scrambling to make sure registered voters have the necessary ID.  One of those approved forms of photo ID is a current student ID from an accredited state public or private institution of higher learning as long as it contains the student's name, photo and a current expiration date. While most colleges and universities issue student IDs, not all are in compliance with the new law. According to PennPIRG, a state consumer advocacy group, the most common missing element is an expiration date. Bucks…

Pa. Voter ID Ruling Puts Burden on Commonwealth

Tuesday's Pa. Supreme Court ruling on a challenge to the Voter ID law now puts the burden on the commonwealth to prove that no voters will be disenfranchised by the photo ID requirement.

It's now up to the Commonwealth to prove that no voters will be disenfranchised by a controversial new Voter ID law after Tuesday's Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruling. The high court sent a challenge to the law back down to Commonwwealth Court where a judge has until Oct. 2 to determine if adequate measures are in place for voters to get a free photo ID in time for the Nov. 6 general election Three GOP and one Democratic justice made up the 4-2 majority in the ruling. One of the two dissenting Democrats on the panel accused the court of "punting" and said the law should be blocked now. The court shifted the burden in the case from challengers to the Commonwealth. "We are not satisfied with a mere predictive judgment based primarily on the …

Election 2012: How Do You Get a Valid Pennsylvania ID?

With the new voter ID law in effect for November's general election, here's all you need to know about getting the proper identification needed to vote.

Starting with the November general election, Pennsylvania law will require voters to show an acceptable photo ID to vote at the polls. Bucks County, with 25,449, and Montgomery County, with 44,952, fall into the top five counties that have registered voters without photo IDs. All identification used for voting must have an expiration date and be current, except for Pennsylvania driver's licenses or non-driver photo identification, which are valid for voting purposes one year past their expiration. Voters who do not have an acceptable form of photo identification for voting can get one for free at any PennDOT driver license center. What you need to do depends on whether you previously had a PennDOT-issued driver's license or ID. Here is …
