Castle Hill Bill, I won't stop writing. Thanks for your kind words. support and encouragement. If I don't write here, I'll find other venues, including Crazy in Suburbia.

This is incredibly flattering and leaves me speechless. Thanks the dubc, one more time with feeling, Lou, Mike Dunn, Kari, Jimmy, Lorri (Are you the Lorri I ran into at Whole Foods?!?), Michelle, creeklegal, Michael Frederick, Randy, Norman, ack, Deborah, Terri, Steve, Paula, Jonathan (the most likely to supplant the legend of Woodward and Bernstein), Jojo, DL, and Beau Hunk. I guess I should be winding the afternoon down. How can I? How can I possibly wake up at 6 a.m. and not feel compelled to check my email. Detox time! Either with a vigorous spa treatment.... or some lengthly sessions with bad TV. You're all splendid.

I agree with Mom of the Horde....That woman in the parking lot was being a bully. Once your son apologized that should have been the end of it. I did have one of these moments, wondering if I should intervene a couple years ago. My son were going to see a matinee at the movie theater downtown. The theater was slowly filling up with people. In our row was an older woman--maybe a grandma--who was with a maybe 13-year-old girl who had some sort of disability that caused her to yell and throw things, like popcorn at people. Those of us in the audience, waiting for the movie to start, all tried to ignore it and think, well, she can't help it. But she continued to be loud and she threw pop corn at my son and made faces at him. He was getting upset, and the older woman wasn't doing anything to stop the girl. Then I saw the girl throw popcorn at the woman. I finally got up and asked her if she needed help and then told her that the girl's got to settle down, or I'm going to have to get management. The girl settled down, for just a bit but started up again. ANd, then, thank God, once the previews started and the movie started, she really settled down and was quiet. I felt bad intervening but I thought, this can go on through the movie.

My last day! I'm editing a story about Mt. Diablo Unified School District and then my try to put into some kind of order various contacts for my interim successor. I'm feeling shaky, sad. But getting these comments from all of you have been overwhelming, and have given me inspiration to go on to my next adventure. I've made many friends through this site, even people I only know by their user name and their comments. That has been among the most rewarding of all. But I still got Walnut Creek in my blood, and still am going to tell stories! You're all terrific, wonderful, the best readers anyone could ever hope for.

I need to get back to the Taqueria.... My son and I tried the new Thai place next to Cost Plus. Granted, we went for lunch, and I don't believe that Asian restaurants show off their best with their lunch menus. I liked my red curry. My son was so-so about his yellow curry. OK, I'll throw out my Thai expat credentials but I did live there and ate food from street vendors all the way up to the venerable Oriental Hotel. So, I've tasted "real Thai" food, and it is this subtle balancing act between sweet, sour, hot, sweet, salty.....I've tried to replicate it myself. "Real" Thai food is hot, hot, hot. That's where I learned to eat hot. Most Thai restaurants in America try to appeal to their idea of our palates and the notion that we want "sweet," so you end up with dishes laden with too much sticky sweet peanut sauce. "Real" Thai food wakes you up and delights you with its combinations.

All this said, our lunch at Thai Rocha was OK. Again, I don't judge a restaurant on its lunch, when it features lunch specials. In conversation with another Nut Creeker, who had his expat Southeast Asian experience, we both agreed that Eleve and its sauces best hits that charmed combination and balance of flavors.

    Sharon, Paula,
That's right! I remember when Penney's was there. My favorite store was Woolworth. I'd go there to get supplies for my pet rats. Yes, that's right, I had rats. I went on my first date in sixth grade with a boy. We walked downtown, bought each other rings at Woolworth, and then out for milkshakes at Scotty's. I also remember, for special occasions, going shopping for a dress at Joseph Magnin's.

Obiwan, It could read Walnut Grove, but sometimes we reporter types use the town where the local office is.

    Dear Paul,
Thanks for the corrections. This is, for the most part, a one-person news operation. The term "6-0" is a casual, fun way of referring to 60. You haven't seen that?
