A people person, Saliqa enjoys talking with others and has an intrinsic curiosity for all things different. That may be credited to her diverse upbringing in a military household, having lived in several different states and countries. Saliqa started her journalism career well before she even realized what to call her craft.

At age 8, she started her first school newsletter, was editor of her high school newspaper, worked with the local press and eventually stumbled into broadcast journalism at Temple University taking her first TV gig. Little did she know she'd stumble yet again into the ever-changing Web world.

Saliqa took her first professional role as an apprentice with CBS 3 in Philadelphia, beating hundreds of other applicants for the coveted position. She was quickly promoted to web producer. During her tenure, Saliqa associate produced award-winning documentary Alex Scott: A Stand for Hope, was a field producer for the St. Patrick's Day and Susan G. Komen for the Cure parades, created the role and helped train Philadelphia's first TV digital journalist.

Looking to broaden her news reach, Saliqa took on another pioneer role with an NBC affiliate in California. Though Saliqa worked with many of Hearst TV's websites throughout the country, her primary role was major breaking news coverage for the West Coast division and her five websites from North and Central California, New Mexico, Hawaii to the national bureau in Washington, D.C. Saliqa covered some of the nation's most gripping news, often times working with CNN to help push content across multiple platforms and as she puts it, beat her competitors and be the first on the Web.

Missing that personal connection to news, Saliqa ventured out yet again and discovered Patch.com. She felt like a match had been made and in a matter of weeks, she literally picked up and moved cross country. Now, she tries her best to capture what's close to Levittown and the surrounding community.

Saliqa is a member of the Asian American Journalists Association and served as the Philadelphia chapter president in 2007-08. She is also a member of the South Asian Journalists Association and is a digital consultant for Illume Magazine. In May 2011, the book I Speak For Myself, featuring Saliqa's essay, was released receiving endorsements from Her Majesty Queen Noor, Deepak Chopra, Greg Mortenson and Soledad O'Brien to name a few.

Besides work, wonderful and sometimes challenging kids keep life eventful and happy for this mom. Often times, people mistake her children as her siblings, which is fine by Saliqa and makes her realize the gym is not such an evil place after all. When she's not busy, Saliqa also enjoys pursuing her other passions: cooking, traveling, poetry and music.

Working with various Grammy-nominated and independent artists, Saliqa hopes to one day complete her own documentary and maybe even do a poetry reading or two on an open mic -- that is, if her nerves don't get the best of her!

If you see Saliqa covering news around town be sure to reach out and say hi!

Beliefs
At Patch, we promise always to report the facts as objectively as possible and otherwise adhere to the principles of good journalism. However, we also acknowledge that true impartiality is impossible because human beings have beliefs. So in the spirit of simple honesty, our policy is to encourage our editors to reveal their beliefs to the extent they feel comfortable. This disclosure is not a license for you to inject your beliefs into stories or to dictate coverage according to them. In fact, the intent is the opposite: we hope that the knowledge that your beliefs are on the record will cause you to be ever mindful to write, report and edit in a fair, balanced way. And if you ever see evidence that we failed in this mission, please let us know.

Politics
How would you describe your political beliefs?

I vote for the most fit candidate which means I am not registered with any particular party. I tend to gauge politicians on their character and through their actions more so than what they do or don't promise the public. With that said, as a journalist I do believe in fairly covering politicians during campaign and other type events.

Religion
How religious would you consider yourself? Casual, observant, devout, non religious?

I'm a practicing Muslim who is open and respectful of others' beliefs. I think the world often times is missing tolerance and good character.

Local Hot-Button Issues
What do you think are the most important issues facing the community?

I believe the economy affects the local community. I also believe the state of the local school districts, including possible school closures and teachers' contracts are points of debate. Also, crime is usually something that generates interest and is something to look out for especially when it directly affects the community.

Where do you stand on each of these issues?

I think the economy is definitely an area where I feel we need to have productive dialogue and coverage so we can truly examine and realize the far-reaching impact the local economy has on the community. This means focusing on area businesses and examining their impact during this economic climate.

The state of the Neshaminy School District and contracts talks are definitely points of contention. Since it's ongoing issue it's hard to say when and how things will resolve, but as a parent I whole-heartedly wish the best for students who are often times the ones directly impacted by any changes, good or bad.

When it comes to crime, I think most residents want to know how it directly impacts them and I'm the same. If it's happening in my neighborhood, what can I do to prevent it and how can we clean up an existing problem?
