GIANT Acquisition Brings 900 Jobs To Region

Supermarket conversion will bring new jobs to region.

 

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has approved a deal that would allow GIANT Food Stores to acquire 15 Genuardi’s supermarkets located in the greater Philadelphia area.

Nearly 1,700 former Genuardi’s employees applied for jobs at the stores GIANT will purchase. In addition, GIANT announced it would hire an additional 900 part-time associates to staff its new stores.

GIANT, a subsidiary of Safeway inc. is the third-largest private sector employer in Pennsylvania. The addition of these jobs will increase its Pennsylvania workforce by ten percent according to a news release.

“We are excited to welcome the former Genuardi’s associates to the GIANT family,” said company president Rick Herring. “We can’t wait to introduce our unique combination of quality, selection and savings to more neighborhoods in greater Philadelphia.” He added, “Customers can expect to see the same friendly faces when they shop at GIANT.”

GIANT is working with Safeway to ensure a smooth transition process. The dates for each store conversion will be announced shortly.
