Sonju is the co-founder and retired President and General Manager of the Dallas Mavericks and the Dallas Sidekicks. While in the NBA, he also served as Chairman of the NBA Marketing Committee and member of the NBA Expansion Committee that brought Miami, Charlotte, Orlando, and Minnesota into the NBA.

For 12 years while he ran the Mavericks, he led the NBA All-Star Chapels. Before leading the thrust that brought the Mavericks into the NBA on May 1, 1980, as the NBA’s 23rd franchise, Mr. Sonju was President and General Manager of the Buffalo Braves. In the summer of 1978 he oversaw the complicated swap of franchises with the Boston Celtics and started the San Diego Clippers who are now the Los Angeles Clippers.

Sonju currently serves as Volunteer Chairman of CAMP-of-the-WOODS, a 111-year-old Christian family resort, located in upstate New York. He handed the Director reins to Jim Hammond in August 2005. For 33 summers, Norm led basketball clinics at CAMP-of-the-WOODS as a way to share Christ with young athletes. In June 2009 many former professional athletes, staff, and campers from those 33 summers returned to help honor Norm as a new sports complex was named after him. Four of his 54 former staff professionals are in the football and basketball Hall of Fames. At CAMP-of-the-WOODS he and his son, Scott, created the well-respected LIFT (Leaders in Further Training) semester leadership and discipleship program.
